I haven't seen an answer to one question that was asked a while back. do any of your states check the out of state tourist on their trucks at random checkstops? Or do they only check you guys at the time of registration?

Currently in calif they are setting up random check points for "Data gathering" with respect to particulates. A friend and TDR member was stoped and checked by doing a "snap" test to measure particulates. His truck is a 01 HO with a Comp Box and 100 hp injectors. He scored a 40 ppm. I believe the ceiling they are looking at is 200 ppm:rolleyes:.

It looks like we will be ok here in so cal. I have the cat on my 05 with all the sht taken out. It doesnt look like that they are concerned with the CO, or the NOX on diesels.

Side Note: The Banks programmers looks like they are EPA, and CARB compliant per the inspectors.

I moved to Wa St back in 2000,for a project with my Co I work for, (Oil Industry). They offered me a permanent job but it didnt pay near the money I make in Ca.....

One could argue that the price of living is less there, no income taxes and so on. But the base salary would have killed my retirement. I have nine years to go at which time I will be going back, to Washington State. Im there every summer for five weeks.

You can have it macdaddy(wa. st. )notice the lower case. I have been here since Oct. 1966, I was 11yrs old. My Dad had been hauling bombs out of Gary, IN. to Bremerton, WA.

So we moved from SE Mankato to Spokane, one liberal sewer wasteland to another.

The home I have now lived in, and completely paid for, I cannot afford next year when I retire. The efin taxes and utilities are more than my original mortgage, and the ***+_&%$ democrats in this state are not finished!

This state is as broke as CA, there are enough producers here as of today, to keep washington afloat, But I am one that is leaving, and I am reluctant to say 'where', because you no account, no class, non-believing, lying, leftwing pukes, would try and follow, to live off my efforts, all the while trying to corrupt my beliefs. :D

See what emissions testing does to a person, they really don't care about the atmosphere, it's about the money they can charge you for the mandatory test!

I understand your frustration with scum sucking Liberal commie trash. After all I do live in the liberal nerve center of the lower 48. In saying that keep in mind there are quite a few of us Regan Conv's living in the OC and near me.

So I heard that in downtown SD there was an emissions check point. Alot of times they do that to curb street racing 'cause they can pop them for illegal emissions equipment.

I reside in San Diego and thusfar I've never seen a random checkpoint other than for alcohol or registration(Oceanside). No safety checks, nothing.

DITTO.

But any cop, CHP especially, who sees a late model truck going down the road spewing black smoke has probable cause to pull you over and check you out. They know late trucks aren't supposed to smoke just cruisin down the road.

Don't take this personally, but thank you! I wish more people would leave California. In fact, I used to have a bumper sticker that said:

Tourists Go Home, But Leave your Daughter!

I'll get the hang of this sometime:eek:

But: Amen Brother! Same thing happened in NM years ago, too many folks from NY/NJ/PA moved there.

For those of you who are complaining about removing a smarty box or the like, try this on for size... I used to swap the engine on my VW every other year for the smog test because it would fail the visual, but could pass the sniffer. What a pain in the butt, at least now it's exempt.

I used to do that too with my bug. Then around the mid ninetys the smog laws changed to 1973 and older were now exempt.

I've been back in Texas registering cars and trucks since fall of 1988. I have never experienced or heard of emissions checks where I live or on the highways and I travel quite a bit. I have heard rumors or mention of some form of emission check for registration in Houston and Dallas but know nothing about it. I think, but am not certain, if it exists it is for gasoline powered cars.

If anyone has better information about smog regulations in Houston or Dallas I'd like to hear about it. Ditto prospective regulations regarding diesel engines. A TDR member posted something about diesel emissions but when I asked him to cite a reference he never returned.

The only way Texas is going to impose smog regulations other than in the city is if the illegitimate socialist federal government deprives us of our individual rights as states and imposes them. The liberal virus that grows in pond scum sometimes effects other states and regions by contact similar to venereal disease.

Well My thought's on this are if they are so worried they need to crack down harder on the rice burner"slike they are doing in our area Turbo Bob I am right on the other side of you Have you noticed on Fri Night the Lowes parking lot off of Bear Valley and the freeway full of rice Junk so far they have hit them pretty hard but whats nice about our area we are close enough to Needles Ca > {where it is and should remain Smog free due to the fact it's so close to the Ariz Border . My last truck I had for over 18 yr's and when I got smart and started playing hard with it Before the Diesel swap I reg my truck in Needles and Never had a problem with smog have a good friend that lives there and I used his address every yr just went into DMV and said oops lost renew notice and payed over the counter . I am soon to find out if this still work's I am in the process of starting another crewcab build and debating on if I should reg it as Gas or Diesel Yes Calif is cracking down but it could be worse we could have to smog every yr . Just my 2 Cent's

Slow wrenchin

The stock VW engine can be removed in about 20-30 minutes. The fast motor had dual carburetors and external oil coolers. That one would take a couple of hours, so really it was about a 1/2 day's worth of labor to just to pass a smog test and another 1/2 day to get back to what I wanted.

I had a 67 VW bus as a lad. Took me 10 mins tops to remove the engine, since it basically just drops off the transaxle spline after removing the 4 housing bolts. Those were the days.....

We put the Fitch Fuel Catalyst on my truck last January. It basically removes all visible smoke from the exhaust. Dont know how (the filter is a can with metal rods inside, thats all). They claim mileage increase of 10%, but so does everyone. Haven't seen any of that.

Saying that I am not very happy with the current administration is the polite way of only hinting at my contempt but doesn't really do my actual opinion justice.

Thank goodness it only took ten minutes, because we were always r&r'n those vdub motors, especially in buses. I've had over two hundred Baja trips and Baja would eat the stockers up. Couldn't ask for a better riding van offroad though.

I reviewed the Texas Vehicle Inspection Program requirements online today after realizing that I didn't know, was curious, and it was easy to find out.

I found no specific mention of current or proposed emissions testing in TX for diesel light trucks. The counties surrounding Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, Austin, and El Paso do apparently have a visual inspection requirement for emissions control equipment on all vehicles but I didn't see mention of a sniffer check or anything very stringent. The rest of the state which is a very large area doesn't even have that requirement.

I've had trucks inspected and passed with no muffler but did have a cat converter in place.

Would be cool to put a late model TDI motor in a old microbus, I am sure its been done. Not by me... !

Earlier in this thread someone indicated that they didn't like TX because of an incident where they were shot at by someone fleeing a crime scene...

I'm thinking that had that criminal shot at a real (tm) Texan, he or she would've reached back to the rack, pulled down a long-barrelled attitude adjuster, and 'got er done'!

Problem solved... :-laf

Don't mess with Texas.

Yep, I agree with both of the above posts. It is now legal for any Texan to carry a weapon in his or her automobile as long as the person carrying is not engaged in criminal activity. It's also relatively easy to obtain a CHL. Texans have always had the absolute right to defend their homes, families, and person.
