California SMOG & Edge boxes

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Train wreckers? any Hulcher, RJ Coreman, Cranemaster.....

NY State Inspections???????

I've been searching on here and the net about the new smog rules for California related to our diesels.

The Edge site says something about their boxes are not legal on 2003 Dodge on up.

So does that mean my EZ is OK on my '01?

Does anybody know if Edge is going to get CARB approval for diesels? Their site says all their gas stuff if CARB approved.

The only other stuff I've done is Mach 1. 6 injectors and a little bigger turbo... are they gonna be able to tell or am I just gonna fail the smoke test?

The truck was fine stock but I've slide down the slippery "mod" slope but not too crazy with engine stuff. I've been thinkin' "... . f---it, i'll just go buy a new truck and leave it stock"... but I like my truck a lot and I've really personalized so much, I'll just have to go back to a stock engine if I have to.

I had that same setup in my '98. 5. You're going to have to yank the box and give it a go. I don't think the FASS setup has a CARB# either.

I've got the Super B Turbo also... I wonder if they'll know the difference? Thank goodness I didn't put on the twins I've been thinking about!

I watched the videos linked on one of the posts about the new smog checks... kind of scary and the truck that flunked didn't smoke too much in my opinion.

I don't renew for another 11 months so I guess I've got a good chunk of time for others horror stories to come out... just like me to make sure I start to worry plenty early!

Mike

On the visual portion of the test, you might fail w/ your turbo. The tester may over look it if he/she does not look good enough (any aftermarket turbo is a fail on visual though). Just a heads up.

Your injectors may be good if they don't throw alot of smoke (they won't notice those anyways on visual), but might be to much if you have to throw your stock turbo back on for the opacity portion.

Your Edge will have to come off.

So, essentially, you won't be able to do any changes to your truck that involves anything from the intake to the cat? I don't know if they're that strict in Nevada. We've had diesel smog for years, but I never had anything more than a BHAF on my old truck. Some pump adjustments, but no boxes, chips, turbos, etc. Sounds like you're going to have to keep the whole "old" system ready to be reinstalled before smog. This is going to really hurt aftermarket sales in CA. Big surprise!

This CARB# thing... . does every part of the fuel system have to have a number on it, or is it something that is on a list?

And because its new they will look for every thing they can. Just to say" because I can, and will fail you". They will be nit-pikers.

This boils down to inexperience on the examiners part. Good luck you guys.

No matter what it's gonna suck! My stock injectors had 100k on them when i went to the 1. 6's as did my stock turbo so I'll prolly just buy new. I saw on one of the sites (BAR or CARB) that if you fail they'll give you $500. 00 to get it fixed (or $1000. 00 to "retire" it) so I might take advantage of that.

The RV 275's are a clean injector and inexpensive. They don't smoke anymore than stock. This is going to be interesting. All the owners living at high altitudes will be forced to travel to sea level to test clean. Sucks.

FYI, the local paper had an article on this and said that only certain California counties, probably the more populous ones, will be required to smog diesels every two years. The other counties will only require diesel smogs on transfers or purchases. Saved me!!!

First I've heard of some counties exempt... . I watched the whole CARB briefing and the training videos and heard nothing about any area being exempt. I'm in Sacramento so I'm sure I'll have to test. It's late in the year so maybe some of the glitches will be ironed out and the testers will have their sh&% together.

I was wondering if they were going to do that w/ diesels, since they do that w/ gassers. Depending on the smog and populations. Certain areas did not need to have thier vehicles smogged.

I lived in Bodega Bay in Sonoma County. We were exempted, but the rest of Sonoma County residents needed smogging. :D

Can you link to the article, or post the papers name and date of issue??

When I was a t the DMV the other day here in Ukiah, they told me that there will be NO county basis exemptions, but instead a uniform state requirement. I am hoping tht they are wrong. This is in Mendocino county that is now exempt for gasser smog checks, except on transfer or purchase.

The name of the paper is the Inyo Register in Bishop, California. I saw the article a couple of weeks ago so it was in a December issue. I tried doing a search for the article but no luck. I did find this site listed below which lists all the counties that will require a smog check.

California Smog Checks - Emissions Regulations, CA Smog Testing Stations - DMV Guide

Inyo county, where I live, and Mendicino county are not listed. You can also enter your zip code and verify if you are required to have the smog check.

Program Area Lookup

Also, here is a map showing all the counties and their smog requirements.

Thanks for the info and links...

as far as I can tell, however, all of the links you posted do not YET include the new CARB diesel testing requirements. In other words, while the info on the sites is valid right now, it may or may not be valid when the new regualtions come into place.

I am still looking to find the article you referenced in the Inyo Register.

It's my fault fellas... if I hadn't bought a diesel, none of this would have happened! I bought my Dodge and 10 days later the price of diesel went way over the price of unleaded and has stayed there or higher ever since! And now this smog crap... if I hadn't bought the damn thing there would be no smog check... . It's the Mecum luck... I got it from my dad... I bet global warming is my fault too!

Yea, it's possible that the local paper has their facts wrong but I'm hoping they are correct.

Would you mind PM ing me so I can find out more about your injectors? Don't want to hijack the thread. Thanks-Casey

I just payed 2010 CA registration with nothing regarding smog/emissions check. Asked the clerk and he had no idea of any pending diesel smog check, just the guy working the counter. I am safe for at least this next year. When I did do the first CA registration in Nov 09 the DMV person did look in the the engine bay for a cat, did not see anything. Shut the hood and all good. I am curious as how this will all play out. I do not want my truck to be smoking and polluting, but I would like to hot rod it just a bit.

Seafish, I see that in another TDR post you have found info, (see link below, post 86), that confirms what was printed in my local newspaper about some California counties not requiring diesel smog tests. Excellent news for some of us, thanks for the info.
