My pump went bad and I am trying to take it off. I am having trouble getting the engine to TDC because I cannot get the retaining washer off of the timing pin, or even feel it for that matter, to take the timing pin out. I tried feeling around in there with a small screwdriver. Am i supposed to be able to hook onto it and pull the washer out? Do I need to just get the washer to spin? I did some searching on the forum to try to get some pics and I found what the washer looks like but not where it sets on the pin itself.

I've used a pair of needle nose pliers, grab it between the knob and the body in the skinny part and pry against the case. Take the retainer and the o-ring off. I find it is easier to stick your finger in the hole, if you can, I have to use my little finger, while someone else turns the engine over to find the hole, then stick the pin in for final fitting. Re-install the o-ring but do not reinstall the retainer. The o-ring will hold it in.

You can get real close to TDC with the timing blade on the side of the P7100 pump. It is under a big hex headed plug with a timing pin covering it. The pin can be installed with the nylon fork going inward to hold the pump at TDC #1 firing, or with the steel nub inward so the pump will turn. The blade that rotates with the pump and the fork are NOT intended to hold the engine from turning, so never use it to hold the engine and pump while loosening the pump nut on the drive gear.

I have made a tool to remove those stuck timing pins in the gear case, from a piece of 3/8 pipe with a u-shaped notch in one end that slips over the stalk of the pin and holds the knob on the end of the pin. The pin's o-ring tends to stick in the housing. It is easier for you if you take the pump off first as then access to the pin is excellent.
