Looking for an modification for the poor design of the capless fuel fill pipe in the new 3500 Rams

Why?it seals. You can't lose the cap. Safer in an accident

In my case I keep getting a mental image of a furry diesel/dust ball collecting in the recess and then falling in when you insert the nozzle to refill.

That may not be the result but I can't shake the image.

From decades of exposure to woods crews hauling fuel in tranfer tanks for equipment and watching the dust and dirt cling to the smallest drop of fuel spilled on or in the proximity of the tank.

Gasoline doesn't seem to do that.

The system may turn out just fine, time will tell.

Mike.

You may want to measure the diameter of the pipe with the filler top, then go to a Home Depot, or hardware store and look at rubber pipe caps, there black with a hose clamp, if one is the right size, just remove the clamp and slip the rubber cap over the top of the filler

Great idea, better than my grease tube end cap!

There is also an expandable rubber plug that can be inserted to keep crud out once you measured the id of the fill pipe to get the correct size. Hardware or plumbing supply house has them and they are cheap.
The bigger issue on the thing is the damn flaps that SLOW DOWN the filling process or take a bath in fuel oil you are paying for that now you have to clean it up and you still smell like #2 fuel oil if it splashes on you or drips on your pants / boots. Fueling should not be such a PIA. A straight fuel pipe with a cap will be sooo simple to use without the flaps slowing things down especially when it blowing like hell and the temps are in the single digits. Ram botched this aspect of the truck.

I have looked at the filler flap. I have not used one, I don't think it would be a problem fueling.

I have a new 13 mega cab and it has the capless fuel fill. I have fueled up five times so far and have had no problems. I actually kinda like it. The fuel door itself is also now sealed with a gasket. Supposedly no dust or dirt should be able to get into it very well. Of course I'm sure a dusty area would probably allow some in.

Nah, got the 06 in 2010. Just traded it and the 99 off for the 13. Just haven't updated my signature yet. Loving the 13 so far. Haven't looked back. I do kinda miss the 99. Mostly because I had it for 13 years!

Sorry Craig, I got ya confused with someone else who posted the other day looking for suggestions on a 3rd gen. I can imagine how you feel about parting ways with the ol 2nd gen. Im going to be in the market for a crew or mega cab in the next year or so, and Ive already told the wife when the new one comes "the ol girl aint goin anywhere!"

I'm talkin bout the truck, of course :-laf

A little off topic, but I finally got that harness installed last week, works great! Very much appreciated!

Craig, I can relate. Missing my 95 which I swore I would never sell. Had it for 17 years. I received an offer for I could not refuse, but honestly thinking of trying to buy it back. I also gave away most of my spare parts, many new, which I'm also regretting. I was high on the new truck I guess. The 2012 3500 is great, its just a nostleiga thing.

It seems that several folks herein are finding that fueling our new Rams to be very doable and if this is the case I am delighted. I have to wonder why others have reported having so much difficulty fueling? If I ever get delivery of my new Ram and fueling it is not a messy problem with proper care being taken. I will just get an expandable plug to keep the system clean like the old fuel cap did for us. I still believe Ram dropped the engineering ball on this capless fuel fill. I want to thank you fellows for all your input that helped eased my concern THANKS GUYS !

I can't comment on the Diesel Ram with the capless filler, but my Wife has a 2011 Ford Edge with it, and in the Gas aplication it is a slick setup, very simple, I like it, I think most Guys with trucks like everything else will have to just get used to it, I would bet that when touch tone phones replaced dial phones the same comments were be discussed

I'm going to look for a PVC pipe cap to put over it just to prevent any "possible" dirt contamination. Plus, some type of key lock for the fuel door. Bought a 2012 fuel door... It is different. dont fit. I don't like the idea that any POS can open the fuel door and put what they want in the filler neck with no effort at all. Was in law enforcement too long. I think about dumb stuff like this because of victim reports taken over the years. ,. .
