I see in some directions that you should install a bypass with the pusher pump in series with the lift pump, and others don,t. The reason I ask is that when I start my truck I have about 16 psi. After running it for some time the pressure pegs my 30 psi gauge. Now I have been running it that way for about 30,000 miles with no problems however I have this question in the back of my head as to how high the pressure is getting and what will be the effect of this. Is everyone having the same problem without a bypass and can a bypass be found with out putting a bunch of fittings together.

Two things,

1. Make sure your fuel pressure gauge is accurate.

2. Make sure your pusher pump is the 8 psi (4600HP) and not the 18 psi (4601HP).

On edit: The 8 psi pusher is used when you leave the stock pump in and just add a secondary pusher pump. The 18 psi pump is used when you completely remove the stock pump and just run 1 pump.

I've had the 4601HP pump in place on my shortbed just in front of the tank (inside the frame) for about 3000 miles now. It hasn't even hiccuped. But my pressure actually dropped a lb or so from my 1-yr old lift pump that did have a strange day or two. That's why I switched over.

But I still need to replace the line from the FF to the VP with 6AN like I have up TO the FF. That may help a bit more.

What I noticed is that it sits at 13 at idle, cruising is around 12 or just under. And WOT is around 10. It seems to keep the flow higher during normal use than the original LP did. I can tow 4000 lbs in Colorado in the mtns and it stays around 11-12 all day long. That is better than my OEM LP did on the side of the engine.

Still happy with it, but haven't put much time on it yet. Got mine from Summit. There is a pic in my Readers Rigs gallery.

I know the pump is a carter 4600 pump. Before I put it in I had installed a new LP and VP44. Also the fuel pressure guage was installed before the pusher pump. I believe it to be accurate because when I first start the engine the fuel pressure is at 15 psi. It gradually climbs to 30 psi then some times it will drop. I am wondering what is going on. I was thinking of trying to install a regulator.
