Cattle trailer question

Dad is wanting to buy some cows from here in Texas and I get to haul them. I have access to a 24ft. gooseneck stock trailer. How many can I expect to get in the trailer? It is about 7 hours one way so really shouldn't be to bad on the critters. Thanks

How have you been? I talked to a guy the other day that had a triple axle stock trailer, dont know how long but he said he gets 30-32 cattle in it, he might not be the brightest bulb in the box though as he pulled with a Powerstroke.

When I used to haul cattle...

We had 8' wide trailers. We could figure 700lbs to the linear foot of floor space (on average). If you have a 7' wide trailer, I guess about 615 lbs per linear foot.



If small calves... less lbs per foot. If1300 lb cows... more lbs per foot.

In our 20' goosenecks, we haul about 10 head of 1000lb cows, without too much crowding. Borrowed the neighbors 24footer and had 14 in it, but it was 8 foot wide instead of 7.



They need good footing, so if it has smooth rubber floors mats, consider using sawdust, as once they relieve themselves, it gets very slick (also makes for a nice car wash for all the fords you pass).

We use 20' trailers and put 9 to 10 1,100 to 1,200 pound cows in it. It is a descent load and they aren't smooshed to awfull bad !! The important thing is to keep a cow from going down and the rest trompling her. When you are traveling their poop is nothing but slime, ( slime is slippery) and they will fall down and not get up . So however many you have in there make sure the floor mats or dirt or whatever you have in the bottom of the trailer is a rough surface. When a cow gets down and stomped on it is a pain to get her up, you usually have to unload them. Good luck

Like everyone else said, it kinda depends on how wide your trailer is and how heavy the cattle are. Hauling ropings steers (300-400 lbs) I figure it takes about 5-6 sq ft per animal plus you want to consider how far of a drive, the weather, etc.

I agree with the above loading numbers.



One thing I wanted to add was about the footing for the cattle. We use #4 wire gauge plain stockade panels in the bottom for traction. Our trailer is wood on the bottom, so we just steepled them to the wood.
