Center console hinge tabs

I know this has been discussed before, my 8 month old beast finally must see the dealer for hinge failure. Anyone know if DC has upgraded this part or should I expect this problem to continue.

Rock,

What are you keeping in there? Your dog? My enter console is a mess. Sometimes I have to bang it shut. My wife asks me if things live in there. I'm kind of afraid to clean it out, might get bit. I also have a case for CDs hanging off the back. The strap for it is around the hinge so when it's closed it's jammed a little. So far the hinge is doing just fine since I got it in '95. I'll bet I've got the messiest center console in the TDR. #ad

No problem with my hinge either,but I had a older puppy who learned to jump in the bed,next thing she learned was to crawl though the open slider and chew the front corner off the console lid. Anyone know if you can buy the lid separately?

It would be nice if you could get just the lid at a decent price.

You can get the lid separate. In fact the only way the factory sends the console is in two pieces (the lid and the bottom) which are connected by a metal. Usually during the assembly some of the flimsy plastic pieces end up broke. Don't know the cost because I have had mine replaced 3 times in my '95 under warranty. Finally gave up, either the cheap plastic parts get broke over use and time due to poor design or they get broke when the tech attempts to assemble the 2 pieces. The dealer said the console can only come from the factory in 2 parts. I then inquired about replacing the whole middle seat portion (hoping it would all come as 1 unit) unfortunatly the dealer was unwilling to do this, so I don't know if that is the only way to get it all as 1 unit from the factory.

I doubt DC has changed much in the design of the hinge assembly. Maybe that's to come in 2003!!!!

I just had my 3rd one put on. The first one lost all the tabs, so they replaced the bottom. The new tabs went on that one too, so this time they replaced the whole thing, lid and box. The lid came with two rips in it, so it'll be going back for a new lid. I'm not optimistic that it will ever hold up - it's just cheap plastic.

Never a problem with my 99 but my 2001. 5 broke the first day I got it. Waiting for it to come in, dealer ordered it 2 weeks ago.

Stopped by the dealer yesterday, he ordered a new lid and commented that he has replaced several on new trucks due to cheap plastic. I quess i will just keep getting new ones under warranty. My beast has been trouble free, if this is all I have to get serviced by my dealer I am a happy camper. I had my 5 star do the first oil change (let him remove the first filter) and I am very pleased with there service attitude.

Do any of you guys that have had your console replaced have a part number? My dealer gave me the old "wrong part number" routine, "but we're working on it". This has been going on for 6 weeks. Thanks in advance.

Just a little dab of vaseline jelly on my hinge tabs and they have been very quiet ever since. At first, the cover would CREAK badly when I closed it. Now it is silent. If you guys are actually breakng the hinge itself, Nevermind. #ad

the four on the passenger side on mine are broken... at 4,700 miles, less than 4 months.
I don't keep much of anything in mine, I DO HAVE A CUP SMOOTHIE if that matters?

My opinion... THE DESIGN SUX! What the H E C K is wrong with a brass or steel hinge and spring loading it. Color me unimpressed. Paint that is "adequate" at best and the crappy hinge, my two big complaints about a tremendous truck. (no wander, no brake pull, just 100% preventable cosmetic deficencies)

I'm on my 3rd box(I think - I'm starting to lose count) - soon to be 4th. The creaking you hear is the tabs cracking. My latest one is only about a month old, and it's broken again already. Mad Max is right on the money - defective design of cheap plastic. I'll try Mick's vaseline trick on my next one - sounds like a good idea.

I heard some mention of $160 for the lid when they warranteed mine. Now , if only they'll change the bottom where it was more broken.

I'm beginning to think you guys don't have enuff junk in yours. Mine has always been stuffed with all kinds of junk. It also has a narrow web belt just in front of the hinge that holds a zip topped bag full of CD cartridges that hangs off the back. Once in a while the buckle rides up in the gap and makes it hard to shut. I have to bang it shut some times with the lid bulged up because my wife has put something extra in it. There is also a cup smoothy with a cell phone braket attached to it. I just checked my hinges and they look new. Maybe I better be more careful. It's not indestructable afterall from what I read here. Are the older ones made better or something like that? Maybe french fry grease helps. Waddaya think?

I just had one of the plastic tabs break off in mine. It has 8300 miles and bought in July. I will try lube on the ones left. How long is the box under warranty? Is it the 3/36000?

I'm not sure if it's covered under 3yr. /36K or 12mo. /12K, but my first one didn't make it to 4K. I'm at 8K now and I need my 4th. Mine keeps breaking under normal opening and closing conditions, no abuse. I plan on finding out what the warranty is before I hit 12/12.

I use silicone spray instead of vaseline on the hinge, strike pin and spray a shot up in the latching mechanism. Seems to works pretty good, only have to do it a few times a year.

Anyone having trouble with the console sticking in the upright position? I have a heck of a time getting it to fold down once up. Think there is a saftey thing that keeps the console from slamming down when the brakes are applied, maybe mine is binding-up?????
