I just got done reading this thread and went out side to check my truck which is a 05 lwb. I have the one vent tube on the front of the tank and none on the rear of the tank, so I got to get me some hose tomorrow and take care of that little problem.

Thanks Fireman.

I have a 03 ctd and the nipple on my tank is the opposit of all of yours! Mine is not recessed but is instead raised up on a dome so everything will roll off instead of puddling, I also do not have a hose attached.

SWB trucks are domed like that at the rear, but I don't think that eliminates the need for putting some hoses on them.

My 2005 Long Bed. The front vent had an 8" hose. The back vent at the rear of the tank came plugged. I added a cheapie fuel filter to the front vent. Thanks to all on this board for posting about this... Oo. ;)

I explained this problem to my dealer and the tech put caps on the two nips. I then drove about a 100 miles and fueled up. When I turned the fill cap it sucked air with a resounding hiss. I called the dealer and the tech suggested drilling a hole in the fuel cap to let the tank breath. After inspecting the cap I see it has an o-ring seal and was ment to be a sealed tank. I called the dealer today and made an appointment to get a hose and filter installed.

Well, I'm a little late on this thread, but went and checked my 2003 LWB SRW 3500 and sure enough... . wide open and recessed. I did the tank vent mod awhile back and cleaned those areas, but had no idea those things were open like that...

I'm off ot the auto parts store to pick up some 1/4" hose and filters... ...

I cannot believe DC would do this..... I think its time some class action was taken... . no wonder lift pumps are failing... . geez.

Looks like DC got me on this one....

After readin this thread (linked from anther) I go out and check the front and rear vents. Sure enough the rear has nothing on it (and is open). DC was kind enough to put a 6" piece of hose on the front, but they were also kind enough to make sure it had a cut about 3/4 of the way through the hose :--) The way it was cut it would funnel water down into the hose!

I ran a piece up the filler neck ad back down for the front vent. Of course I only had a small piece of 1/4" line left in the shop so the rear only got a 12" piece put on and shoved down between the tank and the metal shield. I'll have to fix it properly later.

Someone had mentioned just connecting the two vents. If I did this how would air get back into the sysem as the fuel was used up?

When you connect the 2 vents, you need to use a small fuel filter from a volkswagen. From what I understand, it connects the 2 lines and allows air into the tank.

The theory is that connecting the two would cause problems getting the tank to vent as it drains. I think I was the one who originally suggested connecting them, but others pointed out the possibility of drawing a vacuum on the tank as it's pumped. Instead, I connected the two using a tee fitting, with a small clear fuel filter (I think it's for a VW Beetle).

I have a 04. 5 and the nipple is on a domed area and not a recessed area like the pics in this thread show. Nevertheless, I am going to put some fuel line hose on the nipple just for a piece of mind. :)

Same with my truck (2004. 5 SWB)

Not for nothin, but in the event of a rollover crash, wouldnt this genious setup cause the tank to leak? Not so big a deal for a diesel, but couldn't this get hairy for the fire department if it were a hemi under the hood? Lastly, I have read the many posts here, and I just want to make sure I am reading correctly- There are 2 small openings in the top of the tank that should have at minimum, 6" of 1/4" fuel line attached to them, to help to keep road grime and H2O out of the fuel?

What's the difference? Diesel or gas... I've had much luck getting my trash pile burning with diesel fuel.

The stuff's more flammable than I thought...

Pretty much. Might be a good idea to slap a little inline fuel filter on the ends of the hoses to keep even more grime out.

It's amazing... I've been here a year and only recently started hearing about this... might explain why my FASS continually has crap in the filter... and I buy fuel at a place that has external (and frequently changed) filters now...

Well, I'll be checking this sooner than later...

Doesn't the OEM fuel filler cap have a 1 way valve built into it???

Recall F19 - Rollover Valve Vent Hoses

Looks like there is a recall? I received a recall/inspection notice today. Says "Recall F19 - Roll Over Valve Vent Hoses.

steved,

That's it ! It may be wise to drop the tank and clean it out, I got nearly a gallon of water and sand out of mine last year. While you have the tank down put D. Kelly's (Spooled Up) vent kit on. It really makes filling the tank easier.
