95 chevy tach problem the reading is off...??

I'm looking at a buying a 1991 crew cab chevy with 6. 2 in it. I know with out a doubt how much better the cummins is but I'm contemplating driving the truck for a year or so before doing a swap. Is it the turd I've heard it is?Do they get decent gas mileage? When I do the swap, will I be able to us the 4L80 that's in it with the cummins and if so will the motor bolt right up to the trans and transfer case in the Locations they are in? How's that trans going to hold up to cummins?

My brother had one. It could not maintain 55 mph up an overpass towing a pickup truck on a flat trailer. Doing this it got less than 10 mpg. It spent many days at the dealer too.

They were a gutless wonder and did not like the cold. I rebuilt one once it has a timing chain not a gear drive cam. I had a shop in Huston back then there was a lot of them around. At 250k they were done. If you got a good one with low miles they were transportation. As far as the engine swap, I've done two Cummins swaps both into F450s in the mid 90s. That's back when the 450 had first come out, 88 was the first year. They were 2wd with the straight axle. They were quite the truck at the time. I would recommended getting an engine, trans, and transfer case out of a dodge truck, as a unit. And make it fit. There is no such thing as bolt right in when you're doing engine swaps. Even with engine kits, like putting V8s in jeeps, we did a lot of those and something always comes up. Check out the cummins/diesel conversion post see what those guys are up to. Good luck and have fun with it.

i have an 86 6. 2 with a built with a 92 block not sure what else is done to it. Its was my first diesel and i love it 19mpg i have to say for a non turbo v8 diesel that thing has some snap and for low end torque and traction it walks over my 03 but as for top end it is gutless. when i have time i plan to rebuild this truck for my plow truck /daily driver. it was always great for me not one problem with it.

Ok, so I bought the truck last night and drove it about three hours back home. It smoked like a s. o. b. up the hills and could not keep the speed up on the long hills. I know it needs to go. Does someone make a trans adapter and a cross member for the truck that would allow me to keep the trans and transfer case in the stock location? I'm not sure what trans it is. I thought it was the 4l80 but maybe I'm wrong. It's a 3 speed auto with overdrive. The truck's going to need a lot of work but I'm trying to keep it road worthy and get a 1st or 2nd gen into it as quick and inexpensive as possible for now. Also, does this truck have the np205 transfer case?

I believe it has a 700R4 and 208 transfer case but don't quote me on that. I don't think the 4L80E came into being until the mid-late 90's.

Weve got one in our one of our older fire trucks. It has a turbo 400 /np208. It used to be real sluggish like some of the other guys mentioned, but after a new air filter she runs like a champ! No problem maintaining speed, and will run 85mph no problem. We have it loaded down with about 4500lbs in the bed. gets about 17mpg as well! This is in an '86 CUCV

I's a 1 ton and I didn't think they put the 700r4 in the 1 tons. This motor has about 160k on it and it smokes whenever i accelerate. I just need to get the cross member and get ready to swap it out. I'd love it if there was an adapter plate that would allow me to use the existing transmission and transfer cas but that may be wishful thinking.

It sounds like it's a 700r4. I just found a first gen motor trans and transfer case for a decent price. Should I go this route? How hard are the x members going to be to install from the dodge?

Go here The Diesel Page - for the 6. 2L, 6. 5L, and Duramax 6600 (6. 6L) GM Chevrolet and GMC diesel engines. for the Chevy info. I have a 6. 5 in my suburban, it has the 4L80 trans behind it. From what I understand is that the 6. 2 with a Banks turbo kit on it makes it respectable. As for the swap, if you do have the same trans, you would need a trans controller to use it behind the Cummins. I think you would be better off with a packaged dodge trans and engine with it's ecu/pcm and wiring harness if you plan on doing the swap. Also, your engine compartment is almost too short. The intercooler location is going to be problematic for you. My stock 6. 5 has no intercooler and has no room for one and the I-6 cummins is longer then the 6. 5 V8.

So I bought the drive train out of a 91 w250 last night. It's an intercooled motor with the getrag trans. I really wanted to use the existing 700r4 and transfer case that's existing in my truck instead of the manual getrag trans and I've found few of the adapters for the chevy trans to 5. 9 and they're telling me I'm going to need a new flywheel and starter. Anybody know anything about this and if one is any better than the other. I was able to put the intercooler on the other side of my core support behind the grill on my last truck so I'll try it again that way. I know it's tight but it'll go if you have the right intercooler. It's still the old 73-87 body style. Thanks for all of the input.

mr skinner if your truck is a obs chevy 4dr, it's very likely someone has put the 700r4 transmission in it. as many of the obs chevy diesels i have owned or been around, i have never seen a 3/4 ton up with the 700r4 transmission in it, from the factory. as fluemaster mentioned, lowend power should be quite good. if yours is sluggish, something maybe wrong with it. midrange power is where these engine's really lacked. if you intend on driveing it for a while, there are some thing i could reccommend you chk/change. if converting will take place soon, then there's no need. i had originally looked into doing a cummins repower on my old 81 chevy gasser, but decided on the 99 in my sig. autoworld had lot's of friendly advice on the obs when i was chking. to be quite honest with you, doing a conversion on the 99 was fairly simple, and the obs isnt much worse according to a friend of mine who did his 80' model back in 1990. if you do intend on useing the 700r, i would suggest beefing it up some. btw, as you may know, many fritolay trucks had the 4bt with gm and ford trannys behind them. perhaps all the parts you seek could be had from one of these?
