12v98, see you are still recommending non approved scamsoil products... that overpriced stuff doesn't participate in either the API or Cummins Oil Certification program yet it claims it will work in areas that use those oils... all for 9 bucks a quart. LOL

whereas for less than 40 dollars you can get yourself 3 gallons of Delo CK4 CES 20086 approved motor oil at costco and a fleetgard oil filter from the local supply house

Nothing against Scamsiol here. I use their bypass filters and think those filters are top notch. And since I have a preferred memberahip, I also buy my "Donaldson" filters there since they are not that expensive with the discount. Apparently Donaldson.makes Amsoil filters and paints them black? Wouldn't be surprised if Donaldson also makes their bypass filters.

Here is a synthetic that looks better than the dino, yet for the same price as the name brand dino?????

What Dino oil sells for $30 a gallon?
You can consistently buy Mobil Delvac for $6-$8 per gallon after their year long mail in rebate . It's not that I put price points above quality when it comes to anything for my truck, but when it has been proven countless times that otr engines can easily surpass 1,000,000 miles on fleet spec oil there's not much of an argument to use synthetics.

Oh, I was mistaken. 6V was including the cost of the oil filter in his $40 quote. So I'm guessing the 3 gallons is $25? And the filter is $15?

But if you closely at the picture I posted, it is not a 1 gallon container. It is a 2.5 gallon container. So it's slightly more expensive than dino. My mistake.

Correct, it's a 2.5 gallon jug listed at $75...or $30 per gallon o_O

Incredible! Where did I "recommend" anything with my last post???

I retract my state ment above that you can find off brand synthetic cheaper than name brand dino. The cheapest syn I could find is $20 / gallon

But I will continue to use synthetic 15w 40.

No 5w 40 for me.

seriously, several times Costco has had 3 gallons of Delo for $29.99. some sort of instant rebate.. but good old Walliemart almost always has at least one of the Big 3 as a loss leader ( big 3 being Rotella, Del or Delvac) usally around 10.99 a gallon... it helps if you don't wait for an oil change and you have room to buy it and store it when you see it on sale

since I buy the Fleetgard filters by the case from Diesel Filters online, they cost about 7 bucks apiece.

basic oil and filter change is around 40 bucks using my method..

its not a big deal but saving a few bucks here and there on a constant basis adds up

"since I buy the Fleetgard filters by the case from Diesel Filters online, they cost about 7 bucks apiece."

At that price I assume they are NOT the Stratapore filter???

you assumed correctly ... Fleetgard LF3349

never been one to worry too much about filters... I'll leave that for the rocket scientists of the world.

I looked that filter up and it cross references all three Geno's sells both Stratapore and standard.

For a few extra bucks why not use the Stratapore that is designed for 15K changes?

12V98, never worried about that sort of thing., figure most of it the difference doesn't make any difference.... the LF3349 also is for 15k oil changes... 15k/6M/500 hours is the standard oil change interval for most Cummins engines.

honestly, I don't drive the truck 15,000 miles in 6 months... more like 8 or 9k.. so I'm changing the oil and filter on a time basis more than an end of useful life of the oil basis.

where did you get that 15k design life of a stratapore filter from?

Honestly don't remember where I got 15k. I know it is ok to run it 15k but how much longer I don't know. Stratapore is designed for longer change intervals.

I would not run the standard filter for more than 3k. Actually would never run the standard filter since the better one is available and at not much more $$$.

12v98, I figure the truck engine will outlast me, just doing it the way I am doing it... hard to define "better" I lean toward good enough on most things mechanical... I have the benefit of having worked in a fleet for 40 years now, and know how long an Cummins ISB that only gets low bid oil and cheapest filters(fleetgard must be cheapest because they buy them most of the time) can last under severe use in a public transit application.. its somewhere around 350,000 miles before it starts to have so much blowby that we have to remove it.. basically I don't think most of us on this forum will have any engine wear issues if we just change the oil and filter on that 6 month schedule, no matter how cheap or pricey the route any of us go..

show you a couple pics. these are 2006 Optima 30 foot buses , they are retired. they have a 31000 pound GVW and a rear gear train ISB 5.9 with EGR. they all went 300 to 350,000 miles on that engine using low bid county bulk oil and whatever filter the procurement dept gave to us. I don't think I ever saw one engine fail, but they did wear out.. that was in a duty cycle which consists of driving at an average speed of less than 10 miles in a hour, with several stops per mile, 12 to 18 hours a day for ten years. really amzing how tough a Cummins ISB is, and as I said that is using the cheapest 15w40 they can buy and getting the crap ran out of it all day for years

Just curious if these 6.9's have the increased EGR of the 2010-2012 6.7's?????

And do you think they have the (increased) fuel dilution of crankcase oil problems that was observed pre 2013?

Also, how many fuel filters? And what is the fuel filter and oil change intervals?

Are they fueled with biodiesel and if so, what percentage?
