Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) crankcase vent tube

What could be the problem with oil leaking out of vent tube? this happens when I first start it up and later seems to be less. I believe it might be overfilling of oil. it reads about half a quart over. any other ideas ? Stormy

Did you change your own oil? or have it done some where. Do you Know how much was put in? verses how much was put in the oil filter? If all was done right the level would be correct. Other possibility, fuel getting into the oil pan some how or head gasket-meaning Anti freeze- or oil cooler on right front of engine bad gasket or corrosion wear through?

all just a thought.

These engine will drip out the vent tube, its condensation. There are thing on the market to catch these drips, or be inventive and make your own. I did.

I changed oil myself on the 12V so always put 12 qts in. On the '06 I let the dealer do it twice and each time the dipstick read overfull by a quart. I watched once and figured out that the tech was filling the filter ( good deal) then put 12 quarts in engine, since it held 12? that makes pretty close to 13 and a quart over.



If it was overfilled it will either decrease a little over time or will hold pretty stable. If it keeps coming up and isn't foamy, you may have fuel getting in, likely from a bad injector.



As MLee said, you do get some oil dripping from the vent tube, and a bit of moisture as well from condensation. I tied a plastic bottle over the end to catch the dips and keep the garage floor cleaner. Just has to allow enough air in and out.

I had the oil changed by the same place that I been to for several years and trust them. I guess I have to accept the inevitable that the motor is on the way out after about 900,000 miles. it uses about 1 quart of oil between changes at intervals of 6 to 8 thousand miles. stormy

That's hardly any oil use at all. I had a British motorcycle years ago that leaked more than that. :-laf

If I'm pulling heavy I get enough spatter out of the vent to make a mess out of the bottom of my truck and get some specs on the tail gate. It's from blowby, with 900,000 miles you're going to get this. Some guys rig up a catch bottle on the bottom of the tube to catch the oil and avoid the mess.

I change the oil on my 5. 9 and put in about 10 qts. The manual says 11 qts. but I keep it in the safe range and then check it after a week or so. Usually no problem. Maybe the 12 qts was a little on the high side and it is blowing out the vent tube. I placed an old tylenol bottle on hte end of the vent tube and this solved the dripping on the driveway. I drain it if needed during the oil change butnot needed every time. I would recommend putting in less oil during the change and then checking it after a few hundred miles. I change mine every 5-6K miles and don't have to add anything between oil changes. Just my comments and experience.

An old plastic bottle and a few cable ties are a lot cheaper than that "Cummins Breather Kit"

1995 2500 stock: I made a catch can out of 3"pvc with a drane(BRASS FITTING WITH CAP) at one end near the bottom and a(BRASS FITTING IN A 90 DEGREE L AND POINTED IT TOWARD THE BACK SO WATER CAN'T GET IN) at the top to let crank case pressure out if it need to. (pcv easy to drill and tap for the fittings)

It is about 12" long and held to the frame with 1/4" plastic Wire Ties

Drain the catch can at oil changes. Not very much comes out FINE FOR 50,000 and still going. Rex McKinney

10 quarts in the pan, 1 quart in the filter before installation. 11 quarts total, no more. Do the aspirin bottle thing on the end of the tube. Drill a few 1/4 inch holes around the upper circumference of the bottle first so tube can still "breathe". Make hole ( about 1 inch or so?,gotta measure tube ) in lid so it snugly slides up onto tube. Add tie wrap to tube then to keep lid in place so it doesn't vibrate off. Then screw bottle up onto lid. Pretty simple.
