I have a 99 Dodge in the shop with a mystery cruise problem. When you first start the truck and drive out, turn on the cruise, the lite on the dash last from 15 to aout 30 seconds and goes out. It will not come back on unless you stop, turn the truck off and restart. It will sometimes work again for a few seconds and go out or not work again. I have ohms tested the switches in the steering wheel and they are OK. My scanner tells me that the S/C control relay is not on. I do not seem to be able to find it in my book. It is for a 2000 ( one of the good DC books)

Does anyone have a good idea?

Thanks,

LaserBob

Not a brake switch. You can turn on the key and activate the cruise switch/dash lite and not even start the truck or move anything and it will go out in a matter of seconds.

Sounds like the brake light adjustment is too close, cancelling the CC...

This wouldn't turn the cruise control completely off though, would it??

My father's 99 is afflicted the same way, and eventually the cruise won't activate at all (if left go long enough).

When the vacuum pot on my 97 went bad, it was a slow death. At first it would work intermittently, then it would work only after setting it repeatedly until it would "catch", then finally it wouldn't do a thing. The light did always light up though and indicate that Cruise was engaged. My truck doesn't have nearly as much computer input as the 99 would likely have, so it may be more of an electrical problem??

What's the dohicky under the battery? Is this relevant for a '96? I know someone with a current problem.

Thanks!

The doohicky under the battery is the vacuum pot/diaghram/srevo and is subject to leaking battery acid/rust and would be a very likely problem area on that truck.

Also check the vacuum at the cad, transfer case, a/c, and the el bow at the pump. The elbow just went bad on mine. NO A/C!!!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking this is more electrical related. When my cruise servo (vacuum diaphragm or doohicky under the battery) went bad the cruise light would stay on until you turned off the on/off button. The cruise would sometimes catch and sometimes accelerate to 85 then die - it acted very strange - a mind of its own, but never did the cruise light go out.

Clock-spring maybe?

I agree with this. When my servo/diaghram was acting up, the light in the wheel would always turn on and stay on, until I turned it off. It never went off on its own. The cruise itself would sometimes catch or not catch or catch but slowly loose speed, but through all that the light was on and would stay on.
