I think there are a lot of people out there for whom the GM trucks may be the better choice. I tried twice, in '01 and '03 with Chevy's. I had three Suburbans before those trucks and it was natural to go Chevy. What I found as my towing needs changed is that the GM trucks simply do not do the work as well. Prior to the '06 I liked the seats and interior of the GM trucks better. They also had more features prior to '06. Dodge has cought up on the interior and features IMO. There is no doubt that the lower step in height is easier for many, the smoother ride and more carlike handling from the IFS on 4x4s has merits if those are the traits you seek. The powerband of the V8 diesels is such that rpms rise more quickly and the trucks are generally faster stock than our CTDs. That stuff appeals to many.
Not to knock folks for geography but having moved from the flat midwest to a mountain state I see 10 times the Dodge trucks here than in MN. Everybody there drives a Chev or GMC. For the most part they tow campers and boats across the flatlands and commute in them during the week. Once you hit the grades and start really working the trucks, the CTD starts to shine. The bigger brakes, bigger wheels and tires, better fuel economy, stronger frame and factory intergrated exhaust brake all start to make more sense. On my Chevy's I had to swap shocks to control the loads, swap tires so it didn't look stupid, swap mirrors so I could see around the trailer and trade the short box for a long box to get some fuel capacity. They have fixed a couple of those things now but the Dodge comes ready for work.
This skirts the quality issue altogether. I didn't have good luck with either of my Chevys. Many folks do. I never had injector problems but I ditched the '01 at 97k miles for fear of owning it out of powetrain warranty. I traded the '03 when the Allison repeatedly fried its transmission fluid towing in the mountains. I haven't had any problems on four Dodges save one injector on the '05. I have also become hooked on the CTD torque, the others can't touch it.
I wish the poster luck if he goes that route. I think many of us have been there and while we wouldn't reccomend the GM trucks, they aren't "bad", they just aren't as good as our CTDs :-laf
