caster

OK... . here is my opinion, I think the D. W. is caused by A. to little caster. and B. worn out ball joints. . and I think we all pretty much agree on the ball joints being to blame for many problems. I had the D. W. happen to me for the first time about a month ago just after I raised the front 2" in doing so the caster is shorter!. . and the rubber control arm bushings are squashed forward also... shorter caster! so my thinking is if the caster is right the less likely of haveing the D. W. !!

Hmmmmmm not sure

Jim, Had the front end checked out. the ball joints and everything else were in great shape.

The caster was set at about 3 degrees postive on both sides. Per what I had read in my search on death wobble I had the mechanic set both sides to the max positive spec limit of 4 degrees. I also had new tires put on the same day, and turned my RS9000's up to level four. My original stock michelins were worn down, but still legal inspection wise. They had 54,000 miles on them. So far this week, the big 'DW' has not returned. I am still not confident it won't though.

You should have made "Never" a choice in the poll. I have 116,000, drove with bad ball joints, 36" tires on bent OEM wheels, loose track bar everything. Never had the dreaded DW. Only time I have ever experienced it was in a Drof pick-up.

Another vote for never. I have 200K on the Green Monster. All the suspension stuff is original except for shocks and the right front axle U-joint. I had an '56 worn out corn binder 4X4 that did that or I would not know what you are talking about.

I don't have the D. W. either. I know what your talking about though, I had a 79 Furd that would scare the crap out of my passengers:--)

Hemi is right!

HemiDart you are right, I should have and would have but could not edit it after submitting it.

I will think a little longer before posting my next poll!

If all the front syspension parts check good with no bad bushings or ball joints. then you might want to check for a bent rear axle. It can cause a wobble when applying the brakes. I chased this problem for a while on my first gen.

DW

Mine occurred on my late 02 with 23k miles on it- needless to say front end was unworn. Edelbrocks sucked I have concluded. My new set up with dual Hydros on each side up front has eliminated the problem. That is if we are talking about the same problem- mine was a violent hopping and shaking of the front after hitting a road irregularity at speed- this would be successive ( 2 or 3) ruts at 70 or so- the front wheels never recovered and the shocks IMHO were the culprit. I reduced weight up front and back with Eagle alloy wheels. I say this to disagree with any notion that it relates to caster or worn parts -mine were new and still could have killed me.
