Being a volunteer firefighter... in general... there is nothing more pleasing to my eyes and ears than a 100' tandem ladder truck screaming through a busy city street with a 8V-92TA under the cab. Sounds tough even though its actually slow.

Wanna hear some 2-cycle Detroits?

Come over to our place... there's one running a big water pump as type this at a new natural gas well that Devon Energy will be doing a frac on tomorrow. The new well is about a 1/4 mile away. Come by tomorrow and you'll hear a "symphony" of 2-cycle Detroits running the big high pressure pumps! They'll pump over a million gallons of water and sand at high pressure down in the well to fracture the gas bearing rock.



We're in the middle of one of the hottest natural gas production areas in the US and can see and hear drilling rigs everywhere.

My brother drove Detroits for King County in the Seattle area and he said the best way to drive them is to slam your thumb in the door when you get in it in the morning and drive like your mad at it all day. The Silver 8v92 in my 75 Western Star smokes, smells & keeps the road oiled, but keeps on going!

i've got a sound link somewhere bookmarked on the old computer of a older 4 cycle v-12 marine diesel engine at full rpm [300 rpm] i can't remember what engine it is of though... will look for it this evening...

In the movie Black Dog, the guy says that the truck has a 3406 Cat in it, but on the website Nick gave us, they say it has a Detroit in it. OOPS!

I know what you mean. The audio editing and such, were done poorly. They even have a "diesel" in a Ford F-750 (?) that has the emblems on the grille for the 370 4V gasser.



I've seen several mistakes in that movie. Had to have been a low budget movie. I can tell where they used more than one truck, in the same scene.

I've been reading this thread about Detroits and it brings back memories. In the 70s I drove a dump trailer in the northeast. We had Brockways with 12V-71s, and 13 spds. . Imagine, 90 deg. in the shade, with 40 ton of 240 deg. blacktop, dumping into a paver pushing you maybe 1/2 mile an hour, with 1/3 of the engine under the doghouse in the cab. Of course no airconditioning. I had a thermometer hung under the dash, and on those hot days it said between 130 and 150deg. Soon after that I bought my own Pete. with a Cat. and the biggest airconditioner they had. My . 02 cents

that had the dd in it you could hear thing thing beller for quite a ways. I always liked the sound,my cousins ran it wide open. The more they got done the more $$ they'd make.

he also said that the injectors were locomotive emd 567 series injectors or something along those lines... i'd like to see how, as an emd MUI injector is is massive compared to the standard -71 series ddc mui injectors...

We have a 100ft Aeril platform and 2 heavy pumpers with the 8v92's and 1 heavy pumper with the new 60 series engine. All though the 60 series runs much better it sound like it allways has an air leak. The 8v92's sound great. Nothing sounds better then that 8v92 pulling 78,000lbs of a platform up a hill. Only one thing, why do all detroit's leak oil. It's hard to keep our green floors clean.

mine leaks out of the tubes that come off the airbox (blower) maybe that means impending doom maybe it's normal I am no diesel expert. I got mine because I wanted a dodge tractor, the guy I got it from had several to pick from and bought them all new but they all were either rusty, had less desireable engines or trans (555's, 5+4's etc. ) mine was clean, a highcab, and a custom cab, one had a ntc 350 w/9spd but it was a wreck and it's bad enough having one in my driveway much less a donor vehicle. But I will swap this out when a 8. 3 shows up. Much respect to guys like my dad who drove these things day in dayout for 40+ yrs. to provide for families, no deadbeats in that bunch.

A little oil out the airbox drains is normal, a lot means worn rings or blower seals. You have to drain the airbox so oil doesnt accumulate and turn into fuel. Ever see a Detroit run away? DDC used to market a " Mickey Mouse can ", tank under the oil pan with the airbox drains to it to keep your floor clean.

Worked on a few standby gensets, the record for starting, ramping up to rated speed and coming online is held by a Detroit 2 smoke, This one was a 16V149, 7 seconds.

There a mechanic in Amarillo, goes by the name "Dr Detroit". Anything Detroit he's the man. Funny thing, all his friends call him the 2 stroke king!! I think his wife started that one!!! :-laf :{

i've had a 16v645e3 turbo emd engine go from starting to full speed [overspeed in fact] in about that time or less... and it wasn't my fault [like i have seen others leave a injector rack jack on the governor preventing it from controlling speed] there was a fuel jumper line hold down nut someone had left [dropped] in the cylinder head of #11 or #12 [i can't remember which for sure]... it had viberated around and parked its self right under the fuel rack, preventing the governor from defueling the engine... scared the poop out of me... at least our engines have mechanical overspeed trips on them. . [jams the unit injector in the down position preventing injection]
