Twins Idea

New hoses from Mr. Bob

It should be a relatively quick fix, but not a cheap one.

This turbo "if" fixed will require a wastgate even more than it's initial release!!

If it is "fixed" in such a way as to run with a stock Cummins 12 or 24 valve head and camshaft, it will be a good turbo.

I would rather have an external wastegate. I bought a 38mm Tial for 250 dollars. The price of the turbo would go up at least that much, if it had an internal. No big deal.

Matt, that's what I do... But, on that note, I am keeping a close eye on this thread as this turbo is on my short list of potential prospects for my truck.

How do you figure DF?

By no means is this a bad turbo. It just can't produce the results it is advertised for in it's initial introduction and trim.

39 psig at the compressor MAX!!

60 LBM/ minute MAX

You (should) already know this.

I can send you a copy of my writup if you want to see it before I post in on NWB. What is your e-mail?

Is it a bad thing to control boost with fueling?

IMO, yes -- I can't imagine how sucky my drive to work would be if i had to always worry about breaking something if I made to much boost

As I am right now, with the wastgate working, my fear is staying in the throttle too long and getting too hot on the EGT, (no worried about boost numbers, WG will handle that-thus leading to the high EGT) -- But for those 3 seconds ( :-laf ), its super fun!

that said, has anyone even found the few failures to be boost related?

Heck I thought the DD BB turbo would take the 50+ boost numbers, and the concern would be heat, not shaft breakage (or other boost related failures)

True. . I was just thinking if the turbo could handle more boost than what the engine was set up for like fire rings and head bolts, then you just wouldn't run more fueling past that point.

If what DF says is true then you gotta worry about the turbo first so a WG would be a good safety measure for that component and your back to the eagle eye on the EGT's

Geeze. . its no wonder everyone likes their twins.

Then I guess it depends on how much boost it will make then? My truck is 510+rwhp and makes 37-38psi with it. Cord's truck is 539rwhp and makes 36-37psi (he has a cam). I don't know how much power it would take to get to 50psi, but I'd imagine it would be up there a bit.

As long as the graph is somewhat linear - You could hit 50 psi with 750-ish HP

AND as long as your truck is not high on EGT with the 37 psi boost, then heck, what more can you ask for? :D

Then our trucks are very comparable. I am making ~ 490 HP and just 38 psi of boost from a HX40. With EGT a little on the toasty side. a HX40 and Jammer are very close in peak air mass flow.

oh, unless I specify otherwise, pressures are at the compressor discharge.

You have mail.

Well, I'd never suggest this size of a turbo for that kind of HP, so I guess we're safe.

I have had mine for about two weeks now, but just put it in on Saturday. I've gotta say that it is pretty darn good. I had a first run HX40 on my old 12 valve and this is WAY better than the 40 was on the 12 valver. I can see around 30 psi boost, egts are a wee bit higher, but nothing excessive, cool down before I shut her off happens much faster, I haven't gained nor lost any MPG, and the sound of it is definitely unique. In my honest opinion, the turbocharger was well worth its price, and the price of the new PacBrake I installed in place of my turbo mount PacBrake, and the trouble of removing my entire exhaust and re-working it to make the inline PacBrake happen.

You say your EGT's are a wee bit higher? Higher than the stock turbo or did you have another turbo on your 03 before this?

Yes, I got it and forwarded it to engineering. I know there are some things on there that are not correct, and I believe they want to call you tomorrow so you have all the right info. Can I assume the phone number included in your e-mail is a daytime number?

On second thought, I must insist on the use of e-mail for any correspondance.

That way you and I are able to document the entire exchange and attempt to eliminate the possibility of any technical errors.

I drove one at 550 RWHP and it spooled quicker than I ever would have expected. Unfortunatly I did get one that had machining issues but hay blowing up turbos is kinda fun when it only costs time, NO valves, NO intercooler,NO money for a replacement. We dynoed it then drove it on the street max boost was 39 psi egt was a ok and power was strong from 1500 rpm to 3500 rpm. Although there are turbos to compare it to the HX-40 isen't even in the same game. The need for a wastegate well, that theroy is BS the drive psi is lower than the boost psi, so I ask why the wastegate? Not the the brochure BS I constantly read but a real tested in the truck for instance... I dont belive the jammer was supposed to be a direct competitor for the BLOW 52 but more for the guy up to 600HP, I can personally state that it works well to 550HP, and agin even when it did fail I had no wheel parts go into the engine it still spun freely and best of all I get a new one for free... Yes free oh did I mention free. . NOCHARGE

Ive tested alot of turbos and found some real junk with no mention to anyone but more for the quest for the knowledge. This turbo is good.

Thanks for the review Lenny!

What turbo do you feel is more drivable in the 500-600 HP range? The Jammer 2 or the Sled Puller 66? How close are the EGT's? What one would you choose if you needed to tow, race, and pull?
