New hoses from Mr. Bob

Hey Chris, was power upgrades do you have on that truck? I don't see a box or injectors listed in your signature. According to Cummins, 1450* is the continuous limit for the 555TQ, so at 1300*, I'd say you're safe. :)

BHaner,

Since my truck is really only used to go back and forth to work and to pull the

ATVs around, I'm going on what I see now compared to what I saw with the PDR bomber lite that I was running for 8 months. I was running at 70mph at about 750 degrees with the bomber lite, and now run at 900 degrees with the BB. In a WOT acceleration run, I still don't pin the pyrometer, but it gets up to 1300 pretty quickly and used to take a bit more time just to hit 1200. As a result of that and not painting the streets black during normal stop and go traffic and street driving, I'd say it's very streetable and have no issues with EGTs nor spoolup.

Sounds like it is going to work great for you... My problem is I was at 1400-1500° already with my HX-40. So adding another 100-200° is not what I was looking to accomplish with a new turbo. I did like the fast spool up... But that is not reason enough.

I am at almost 500 HP. My EGT's with this turbo at WOT hit 1600°+. I am having a hard time figuring out how you could get another 100 HP out of this turbo without some serious engine damage. Unless cummins says that we can now run over 2000° for short periods of time.

Thanks for the review Lenny!

What turbo do you feel is more drivable in the 500-600 HP range? The Jammer 2 or the Sled Puller 66? How close are the EGT's? What one would you choose if you needed to tow, race, and pull?

Im going to wait to make the call after the replacement Jammer2 gets some time on it, but those are the only two choices I would consider at this time. . :)

DD Ball Bearing Turbo- Real world..

Hi guys, I recently put a DD ball bearing turbo on my '05 3500. I purchased this turbo from Fred Swanson of www.desertdieselparts.com. I have done business with Fred for a couple of years now and you can not go wrong dealing with him!

Now, I haven't posted because I wanted to get some real world towing under my belt to see how the Turbo worked. I Had in my 2nd Gen a Diesel Dynamics "Max Boost" hx-40 Hybrid that I loved! That turbo needed to get to 10 PSI and then it spooled so fast that I thought my boost gage would break :) Egt wise, that turbo ran a little hot, but not bad at all. .

The Ball Bearing Turbo: Around town, spool is almost instantaneous. Only having had 3k miles on my truck when I made the switch, I really can't tell any difference between this and stock. It spools very linear... Now, a couple of points... I did not have a EGT gage on the stock setup so I can not compare stock to this... I can only marvel at this turbo's EGT management combined with the ATS manifold that I put on at the same time... I was towing my buddies 10,000 lb Sea Ray today so he could get it serviced. I was pulling some pretty good grades and the most the EGT got to was about 1025f! The only way it got higher was when I allowed the truck to lug going up hill just to see what EGT's did. The most I saw this way was about 1175.

To say I am impressed with this turbo is an understatement. I want to say that with this combo of turbo and manifold my EGt's are around 200 to 225 degrees cooler than my previous truck...

I know that comparing my previous truck to this one with all the mods my second gen had is truly apples to oranges... I only mention the second gen as to compare both truck towing identical routes and weights... On this third gen I was towing with the Edge Juice on setting 2/2.

I tried this turbo with the Juice turned off. I Tried this to feel the difference over a stock truck with just the turbo alone. I felt that the truck felt like it did with the stock turbo and the Edge on setting 1/1. About 50 Horspower added at that setting...

I was very torn deciding which way to go when purchasing a turbo this time. I ultimately decided to go with the DD ball Bearing turbo because of the positive experience that I have had with their products in the past. I am not disappointed.

I am extremely happy with the power that my truck has with just the Edge Juice, Ball bearing turbo, AFE and ATS manifold. I do not feel a further need for injectors etc. This Common Rail ISB is very strong right out of the box and with just these mods is already a towing beast!

OH, if anyone is fighting over the decision to get a dually over a SRW and you tow, You WILL NOT REGRET getting a Dually. I was worried about parking, clearance etc... It is not an issue. I love towing with my dually. The difference in stability towing heavy loads is night and day. .

Cheers, Bill

Hrmm, so your Bomber Lite cooled better both at cruise and WOT runs, yet it seemed to run out of steam. . too low in the RPM band. What do you mean by RPM band, are saying at low RPM's it didn't spool well or stay spooled?

So people notice the noise, is it that loud?

Bill gave a great review also then after I thought about it for a while I began to wonder. .

I can tow 6000 in the mountains with my VA on #2 and stay below 1200 with my stock charger. I don't know what 2/2 is on a Juice.

The only reason I started looking at turbo's is when I tried a Ramifier turned up on a 0-60 run I saw over 1500. Having the non HO I lack the added oil cooling on the pistons so figure if I am going start adding more fueling I need better cooling & a more dependable turbo.

Yes, I got it and forwarded it to engineering. I know there are some things on there that are not correct, and I believe they want to call you tomorrow so you have all the right info. Can I assume the phone number included in your e-mail is a daytime number?

Kieth, thank you for indicating I had errors.

I have changed it, and it is now much more readable.

I won't be posting it here on TDR so the Mods dont have to regulate a urinating contest.

It is posted here.

Some info...

I just had a long conversation with Aaron at Edge Products about the status of this turbo. I pointed out that it appeared to me that there were some issues with this turbo (several failures) and that Edge, IMO, had not been very forthcoming with information about their intent to remedy the situation, which certaintly can't be helping their public relations. Here's my best recall:

Aaron was very apologetic about the fact that they had not done a better job of communicating about the "problems" and their plan for resolution.

All failures have been on 3rd gen. trucks, including Aaron's. As a result, sales are suspended until Turbonetics (the manufacturer) indentifies the problem and most important, the fix. At this time they don't have a definitive answer.

Aaron says that Edge still believes that this is a good turbo and it is a priority for their company to again resume sales when appropriate.

He said he was available by phone if anyone has questions.

I received a call from Turbonetics. Repaired turbos should be back in 2-3 weeks. It sounds like sales may resume. And as a side note, there was 1 failure on a 12 valve truck.
