DD Ball Bearing Turbo- Real world..
Hi guys, I recently put a DD ball bearing turbo on my '05 3500. I purchased this turbo from Fred Swanson of
www.desertdieselparts.com. I have done business with Fred for a couple of years now and you can not go wrong dealing with him!
Now, I haven't posted because I wanted to get some real world towing under my belt to see how the Turbo worked. I Had in my 2nd Gen a Diesel Dynamics "Max Boost" hx-40 Hybrid that I loved! That turbo needed to get to 10 PSI and then it spooled so fast that I thought my boost gage would break

Egt wise, that turbo ran a little hot, but not bad at all. .
The Ball Bearing Turbo: Around town, spool is almost instantaneous. Only having had 3k miles on my truck when I made the switch, I really can't tell any difference between this and stock. It spools very linear... Now, a couple of points... I did not have a EGT gage on the stock setup so I can not compare stock to this... I can only marvel at this turbo's EGT management combined with the ATS manifold that I put on at the same time... I was towing my buddies 10,000 lb Sea Ray today so he could get it serviced. I was pulling some pretty good grades and the most the EGT got to was about 1025f! The only way it got higher was when I allowed the truck to lug going up hill just to see what EGT's did. The most I saw this way was about 1175.
To say I am impressed with this turbo is an understatement. I want to say that with this combo of turbo and manifold my EGt's are around 200 to 225 degrees cooler than my previous truck...
I know that comparing my previous truck to this one with all the mods my second gen had is truly apples to oranges... I only mention the second gen as to compare both truck towing identical routes and weights... On this third gen I was towing with the Edge Juice on setting 2/2.
I tried this turbo with the Juice turned off. I Tried this to feel the difference over a stock truck with just the turbo alone. I felt that the truck felt like it did with the stock turbo and the Edge on setting 1/1. About 50 Horspower added at that setting...
I was very torn deciding which way to go when purchasing a turbo this time. I ultimately decided to go with the DD ball Bearing turbo because of the positive experience that I have had with their products in the past. I am not disappointed.
I am extremely happy with the power that my truck has with just the Edge Juice, Ball bearing turbo, AFE and ATS manifold. I do not feel a further need for injectors etc. This Common Rail ISB is very strong right out of the box and with just these mods is already a towing beast!
OH, if anyone is fighting over the decision to get a dually over a SRW and you tow, You WILL NOT REGRET getting a Dually. I was worried about parking, clearance etc... It is not an issue. I love towing with my dually. The difference in stability towing heavy loads is night and day. .
Cheers, Bill
