I'm wondering on how to disable the engine from firing when cranking. They have a 96 2500 at work that's just sitting there, and I'm thinking about trying to buy it. Since it's been sitting, I wanna get some oil to the turbo before I fire it up. Thanks in advance.

also, this trucks an auto and I wanna convert it to manual. I know alot of people say to just beef up the auto, but I think I can get a manual for a decent price. I know I need transmission, flywheel, clutch linkage, and driveshafts. Anything else you can think of? Thanks alot

Maybe disconnect the power to your fuel shut off solenoid it should be in the closed position when off. You might be able to pull the relay to it to disable it.

Uh, I don't know all of the wiring on the p-pump. Don't they have a connector on the side of them that plugs into something? If I remember right, it has three different connections in this thing. If I pull that would it work? Sorry about my lack of knowledge. Thanks

I'm not a mechanic but any of these should do the trik.

Unplug the fuel solenoid - ooooooor undo the blue fusable link off the driver side battery- ooooooooor loosen the six caps on the top off the injectors ( wich may also help purge the fuel lines of any air that it may of gotten in)

oooor buy a remote starter - the kind mechanics use to bump the engine while working on it, oooooooor put it in third gear while being pulled aroud the parking lot (assuming it has a manual trans of coarse)

oops have auto nevermind the pulling around thing ooooooor put the manual in now then you can pull it around in 3rd to lube the turbo up.

The fuel solenoid is located behind the injector p-pump follow the wiring up to the 3 conductor plug socket & voila -- no firing

Yep no fuel = no run

Those three conductors are what provide the power to both the initial 'pull up' part of the solenoid & the "holding" part also.

Try not to crank it for more than 10-15 seconds at a time with a decent cooling period in between cranks.

good luck

There is a few threads out there that talk about a auto to man. conversion for both the nv 4500 and the 5600. A search should locate them easily. If you do the 5 speed I would recommend checking out the 5th gear nut fix & possibly upgrading the clutch & input shaft if bombing is in your plans.

Have fun cranking!

Just crank her until the gauge starts reading pressure? That should be more than enough right? I just hope the batteries will last long enough. Like I said, it's just been sitting there for a while.

I don't know how much pressure you'll see with cranking - but if you see it move at all then it should be more than enough. I'm curios to know if you get any pressure showing on the gauge myself.

It might be a good idea to pop the valve covers off & pour a little oil over the valve springs. Maybe someone has some hands on experience out there on what to consider doing on a motor thats sat for awile.

have fun

If I buy it, I'll probably go with a 5600 since there wouldn't be that much difference in price, and I'll keep the truck till the wheels fall off. I guess we'll see if she fires in the next couple days. THanks a ton for your help.

I have done a lot of conversions both 5 spd and 6 spd I do have a list of required parts If your truck is a 96 2 wd the 6 spd does not have speedo conn if it a 4wd the speedo is in the transfer case 6 spd would be no problem if you want the list let me know

One of my "theft delay" switches disables the fuel solenoid. I also use it when I change oil to get pressure up before a start. Mine will show 40 PSI after about ten seconds of cranking after an oil change.

It's a 96 2500 4x4. I couldn't read the speedo real good, but it looked to have over 300k on it. Hopefully I can talk the boss into getting rid of it for real cheap. They also got a 12 valve reg. cab 2wd that looks pretty good and has less miles, but you definitely need 4x4 around here.

How old is the fuel in the tank?

I don't know the standing life of diesel is but if it is well over 12 months old I would probly drain the fuel filter and at least put fresh fuel in the filter & push the primer button a couple dozon times with the injector caps loosened before trying to start it up.

note - if you do it this way it will run rough for a minute & would consider that to be normal
