Discount replacement keys?

I've lost or misplaced one of my orig. truck keys.

I finally gave up finding it and decided I would buy two additional matching keys. The local locksmith said I had to buy them from the Dodge Dealer.

I went there, and they said they can order them for $160 ea. plus tax, shipping, and $75 for programing.

I know there are some online discount Mopar sites, but I've done some searching and can't find any.

If anybody can give me some direction, I'm hoping to get two keys for a little less than the $450 price tag, that Dodge wants.

Any info. or ideas are appreciated.

By looking at your truck signature (Big Horn) do you have the factory alarm? My '07 big horn didn't come with the factory alarm. What I guess I am trying to say is would you need a key "programed" if you didn't have the factory alarm and ignition interlock? Couldn't you use a standard type key or a standard factory key with the door unlock fob?

Seen them on Ebay you would only need a locksmith or dealer to program 1 of them and when you have 2 programmed keys you can program the 3 rd on the truck. You need the programmed key to start the truck , you can get into the truck with a regular key even if you have an alarm. Hope this helps, 160 a key is a rip off

Thanks for the info guys. Frankly I don't know if I have a factory alarm with a chip. The parts guy at my local Dodge dealer said my new keys had to be programed,but he was in hurry. My past experience getting accurate info. from this dealer has not been good.

Is an alarm standard equipment, how can I tell? It wasn't on my invoice, unless it came with the Big Horn pkge.

I left my owner's manual in Wi. so I can't look this stuff up untill spring.

Thanks to AAA,Ca law provides a procedure for you to use certain locksmiths to supply replacement programmed keys. It went into effect Jan. 1. I couldn't tell you where to go from here. Perhaps start calling reputable local locksmiths?

I'm also a AAA member and I'm on the phone (on hold) with them right now.

pBar, I called mopar4less with my VIN and they also told me I have an alarm.

Also they want $150/ea. plus shipping, then I go to dealer for programing. And yes I will only pay for oneprogram,thanks.

Baja, I spoke with my local AAA and they said they don't know about the law, but do have locksmiths on call that can start your vehicle with special equip. if you have no key.

I'm going to E-bay now, to check on keys.

My used 2005 RAM came with only one set of keys. Ordered another on E-Bay and programmed myself using either the included instructions or info in manual as I recall.

My '07 came with the POWER DOOR locks and it doesn't have the factory alarm. I DO have the remote to lock and unlock my doors.

It will say on the invoice that it has the security system. My truck is also a Big Horn edition and it doesn't have security system.
I read elswhere on this site where an owner had a spare key made at a hardware store and when he tried it, He had the factory alarm with programed keys, his alarm went off when he unlocked it.

It is cheap enough to go have a plain duplicate key made and try it. You might not need to buy another remote key.

MoparDave, I just finnished ordering four keys on ebay, ( 2 for me & 2 for my wifes Honda) for $75 including shipping. Sooo much better! Now to get them programed.

Motorhead, mopar4less checked my VIN and said I did need the chipped key. The keys I bought are chipped but don't have remote buttons and are only $16 ea. I'

ll have them cut and see if they will start the truck. If not, I'll get them programed, then do a water tight hide-a-key with one, and put the other one away.

Well I think I can see some light at the end of the tunnel, and thanks to you guys I kept about $300 bucks in my pocket.

A good dealer salesman would have just gave you an extra chipper key. My salesman gave me two extra chipper key and then cut them for me free. I took them out to the parking lot and with my owner manual and my two original keys, I programed them.



I keep a chipped key hidden inside my truck. I also had two-non chipped keys made at HomeDepot to unlock the driver's door. I keep one non-chipped key in my pocket with my house keys and the other hidden under the truck in case of an emergency.

I too have the keyless remote w/sentry system. I avoided the factory alarm as these things are complicated enough and I have a reg. cab(who would steal mine?) I hated the giant remote so after purchasing chipped blanks on e-bay and having them cut,I programmed them using the owner's manual. It does take two programmed keys to program the third my year. Anyway a year has passed and no issues with the e-bay keys. I do have to manually open the doors now though.

Ray, you will need to program them but its simple to do. I got the same keys with out the remote fob. If you don't program them they will start the truck but it will run for maybe 5 seconds and then that's it.

When I bought my '06 the dealer told me a replacement was $90. I bought one off of ebay and programmed it myself, but you have to have both original keys to make it work. Cost me about $20 with the price of the key and getting it cut at a local hardware store. I also keep a non-chipped key in a locked key safe on the frame in case I lock the keys in the truck; which I have done in my garage more that once because the remote door lock is on the key. I liked my remote on my '98 better, it was separate from the key with little chance of locking the doors by mistake.

I've got an 08 and found two chipped keys on ebay for $35 with shipping that I programmed myself with included instructions. The dealer wanted about $180 a copy programmed. These keys don't have the remote for the doors and panic alarm, but do get you into the cab and will start the motor.



I needed some extra keys to give shuttle drivers when we go rafting, I don't think they need the remotes.



Question I just thought of: I will have to figure out how to turn off the alarm without the remote function... ... .

Say, anyone figure out if a chipped key will work with an older year remote? These dang big keys just don't work well in a pocket, and I have set off the alm horn more times than I care to remember.



I like the older 97, get a key for 3bucks, and chose remote or not... . I have keys wired to the frame on all my trucks, never know when you'll need to get in and go.



On the 07 I bought a chipped key, programmed and wired under the truck.



On my 02 Ferd I keep on in my wallet [non chipped, but works fine] and one under the frame. Nice when traveling with the dog in the summer, leave it idle, lock doors and then get in with the wallet key. Good luck putting one of them fatty chipped keys in your wallet, unless you wear a fanny pack but I ain't going there
