The reason I asked about the casting was because I worked on the machining line years ago. I could look down the line at the coming blocks. The Tupy blocks were as bright as a nickle and the JI Case were as dark as coal. I know the metallurgy had to be different. I wonder if the bright blocks had more nickle which I know decreases were rates.

Resurrecting this old thread. I just installed this engine today. Bored . 020, only had to polish the crank journals. I wish I had taken more pistons out before I sent it to a rebuilder. I just noticed a couple days ago that the #1 port of the exhaust manifold is covered in an oily, tar like substance. Anyway, $3600 poorer, but now have a fresh new engine to work with. There is going to be a dyno day just after Mothers Day near Conroe, TX. The rings should be seated by then, especially if my dispatcher gets busy:-laf

oil rings can wear out, lose tension without breaking or leaving scars on the cylinder walls. valve guides can also contribute to oil consumption.

If someone would check my math please. I think I now have 377ci, 6. 2 liter Cummins. Stock is 102. 1 mm (4. 02 in) bore and 119. 9 mm (4. 72 in) stroke. Bored . 020 in.

No calculator here at the breakfast table... But the back of the napkin in my head math says a . 020 over bore isn't going to give an 18 cubic inch displacement increase.

Thanks for the math check guys. It didn't look right to me either.

It is running, and a lesson learned. Coolant leaks are in direct proportion to the number of clamps you do not tighten down:-laf I took it for a short drive today, then got involved in fixing an outside faucet. Tomorrow I'm going for a longer drive. So far, so good!!

retiring motor

Finally decided to retire my million plus 21 thousand mile motor still ran good when I took it to the shop for an exchange. the only thing replaced was gaskets due to leaks at 500 thousand. bought a backup motor several years ago waiting for signs of failure. i believe I will have it torn down to see what wear there is. I have gut feeling that the replacement wont last as long. neither will I as Im approching my 80th birthday. Keep on truckin. Stormy

Dang, RV don't you ever stay home?:-laf That some good miles. I think your sig shows 12,100,000 tho:eek: (1,2100,000) Maybe it should look like this 1,021,000??

I think that both Cummins and Dodge would love to buy your truck for a show piece. AND to give the Duramax and Powerstroke crowd a black eye ;)

GAmes was there enough cylinder wear that it made reboring necessary versus just a hone job?

Boring was required. The bottom of the holes was larger than the tops. Remember, . 020 over is only . 010 off the sides. That isn't much. I have no complaints.

On my way to AZ, PA, OH then AB. One heck of a test drive. The OH to AB trailer is a 36' toyhauler:D

Seriously, you should contact Cummins about that right now.

They might be interested and if those miles are documented even better... ... .

Mike. :)
