Off Roading my new race sled!!

Competition Finally got the 47RE in.

i posted this on the 12v forum but figured it would get a little better input in this forum. i have a 95 w/a 4500 and want to put a divorced t case in it, i got a 205 ford case but my problem is what do i do w/ the transmission? is there a way to get a spline and seal to go to the back of the 4x4 transmission or do i have to change the transmission to a 2wd one? i am going with a divorced setup because of the severe front driveshaft angle with 12+" of lift. i know someone has to have a idea on this site.

I think if you get the tailhousing fron a 2wd 4500 you should be all set. I have never done this swap with a 4500 but 727 autos you just put the right tailhousing or tcase adapter on them.

wow im glad to see someone got back about this Oo. where would be the cheapest place to find the parts to do this? i would like to just trade trannys but i dont think that will happen because it would help me and its just my luck. some more info would help and as a plus i just got some photos to post of my truck! Oo.

i guess the great lakes, i live near lansing michigan, i did call advanced adapters and they said they didnt have anything for me. i might have a guy intrested in trading me a 2wd, but i will have to wait and see how that pans out.

Too bad you didn't do this a couple years ago when I changed the 98 to a 4x4. If that doesn't pan out you can call Herald at Davis Auto Salvage. the ph. # is 877-528-5741, in Corbin, KY (six miles from TN) This is where I call for all my dodge parts, he deals in other stuff, but mostly with 3/4 and 1-ton Dodge CTD trucks.

yeah thats my luck but that guy is just the kinda man i need to talk to, i would like to convert my 98 auto to a stick and cant find a salvage yard around here thanks for the tips. Oo.

I live about 15 miles from Davis. They'll have the parts but you'll pay for them too. They are a full salvage yard but the dodges they get are mostly heavy trucks. I guess on a national pay scale they are appropriately priced. We poor mountain boys shy away from them though. :) I need to get with them about some door panels.

Unless I'm mistaken you should be able to find a late model NP205 TC (gear driven) that will bolt directly to your NV4500. Early models in the old Chevy's & Fords used a squarer bolt pattern that matched the SM465 4spds. The later 205s had a round bolt pattern that fits the NV4500. Chevy used the NV4500 in their trucks in the late 80s/early '90s w/ a NP205 TC that bolted directly to the transmission. While the 205 is much stouter than the New Venture TCs, it doesn't have as much of a reduction. (I realized a little while after I wrote this that the Chevy may have the front diff on the opposite side from the Dodge, but I don't believe it matters. Again, check w/ Advance Adapters if this'll work. )

Check w/ Advance Adapter, but this should work nicely & was what I was planning to do w/ my '71 K20 Chevy until I decided it needed a 24V CTD & an NV5600. From my research I should be able to bolt the NV5600 directly to a round pattern NP205. I may, however, put a reduction unit from a NP203 transfer case ahead of the 205 for lower gearing (requires adapter kit from ).

this is why i need a new one, its on its third one! any ideas as to why this keeps happening??

Yeah, it looks like you're drooping the front axle too much & the front drive shaft won't flex far enough & the weak point is the transfer case housing. The extra twist its putting on the case is causing it to self destruct. Aluminum isn't very flexible.

Means the transfer case isn't mated to the transmission. Instead it has an intermediate shaft between the transmission and transfer case and the transfer case is mounted on it's own seperate crossmember.

the 205 only has a 1. 96:1 low range. you can get the doubler 203/205 from off road design. I run a divorced 205 in my 74, and it works ok, except I keep breaking the short shaft.

Neither a dodge or chevy x-case will work, has to be ford because of the front output.

weve done this to one truck (a 9612V/NV4500/divorced 205 in a chev 4-door) but I believe some of the parts were from off-road unlimited and they are not produced anymore. thats what I was told.

I think it would be easiest to get a 2wd trans. I think randys ring and pinion has 1410 input yokes for the 205. check them out. Make sure and run good u-joints, breaking a short shaft sure screws the floorboard up!!!

i would think that you could just mount the 205 behind the stock t case and clock it downwards enough to clear the driveshaft( thats if you have a lifted truck, because it would hang a little lower. The other advatage would be that you would have a double low gear for fourwheeeling.

mjoppie-

Where did the remainder of the case go when it let loose? Did it just fall out of the bottom of the truck or did it go flying off with parts and pieces everywhere? In other words, was there mass carnage? I've never seen anything like that. Amazing.

[Thanks for educating my on divorced t-cases, supersonic]

well most of it went flying down the road but there i sa big piece that was hanging by the chain when i cut it in half on the first one and the second time the whold side blew off and bound the chain up in whats left of the case and had to use torches and pry rods to piece it out. i do have a guy that might want to trade for a 2wd transmission and i should be gettig it started. i was planning on using those ox or cts u joints for the short shaft. i dont think i will need a lower gear ratio with the twins and a 5spd for what i do with it. i just want to stop the problem. will the stock driveshaft between the two out of the old ford be strong enough or should i look into getting sompthing custom built?

I didn't realize that you blew up a t case. I would say that you would need a custom drive shaft becasue the yoke szes in the dodge would be bigger. I've never had alot of trouble out of these cases and I drive a 97 with over 290,000. some times low was used to back heavy loads on pavement ( loads over 30k ). it would be easiest and cheapest to just go back to stock and it would also be lower than just a np 205 1. 96 to 1
