By reading my signiture, I was wondering if anyone knew if I my rearend is made to lock up. The reason I ask this is only one tire will spin. If it is a posi, Does anyone know where I can find a good deal on new clutches? Because of the horse power that I am running, I cant hardly take off without roasting my tire. Thank you all for your help,

Jim

Look on the underside of your hood

Mine shows a code DSA Limited slip diferential. I have never seen only one spin. Seems to work great.

go hold the brakes a bit and give it some throttle.

You leave two marks... ... you got limited slip and its working.

Should look something like this :

This was back when I only had a PowerEdge on the truck.

Clutch pack assemblies are terribly expensive from OEM's.....

I spent over $900 just in parts to rebuild the carrier on a Dana-70 out of an ambulance... . all we got were the clutches, spider gears and related goodies... . no new ring and pinion or any bearings/races.

Your rear-end might have a nifty little sheet metal tag that says limited slip or something along those lines... . mine does.

Matt

Clutches for a dana 70 Powerloc are about $70 at least as of two weeks ago when I bought mine. You WILL have a tag on the diff cover indicating that your are required to use LSD additive in your oil. If someone removed the tag go to the dealer with your VIN number and have them print you a copy of your build sheet. :)

WOW!! Wish I would have known that when I rebuilt that last one..... I imagine the spider gears/etc. could have increased the price a little, but not $800 worth!

Oh well, it wasn't my money. :D

Cmon Kat, they should look more like this.

MDW, left these.

BTW Mike, they're still there too. :D :D

azgearpro, I think there is a little metal tag at the top left of the rear end cover of the LSD rear ends. If you don't have a tag it's probably not a LSD rear end. I think there is a tag on the bottom side of the hood that tell you too.

*Moment of silence for the truck that is no more. *

Ya I saw that that was pretty good. , but like I said mine was when I had under 300hp :D Mines was in CO as well... ..... stock transmission ;)

I haven't tried to do one really since then. Although the ones I left at the strip the other day when it popped out of 4 wheel drive were pretty cool, I should have took a picture.

There is a label on the bottom of the hood right by the latch on my truck that says it has a limited slip diff. . It also has info about paint color and so on.....

Another way to tell is to get both rear wheels off the ground and with the engine off and the trans in neutral turn 1 wheel and if the other side goes in the same direction you have LS if it goes in the opposite direction you dont. I am not sure if this works if the LS is totally trashed but I think the clutches will grab enough even then for this test to work.

If there is too much anti-slip additive it won't work right. A clutch set for my 80 was almost 500 whilesale from my dealer.

Does Auburn Gear or Thorsen Gear make a diff for the Dana70 or Dana80. Seems like before burning $500 on a clutch pack I would see about getting rid of it.

Seems like I hearpeople talk about Lockers and ARB Air Lockers, and our generic LSD. However there are several types of posi-traction makers out there that sell diffs that are only slightly more agressive that our OEM models, dont cost $800+, and dont have clutch packs that wear out or require additives.

Back when I had my 1500 gasser w/o LSD, I looked into getting one from local shop. Reputable and all that. For the gasser they could get me the OEM clutch model for $250 and told me an Auburn gear was only $325. Unlike lockers which are very agressive, expensive, noisy, etc. The Auburn gear was supposed to be only slightly more agressive than the OEM, still smooth, quiet, etc. And only $75 more. However it used a mechanical spring arrangement for torque sensing and did not have clutches to wear out and did not require additives. -- Of course I am trying to remember what the salesman explained 2 years ago.....

The detriot true trac is about the best limmited slip out there. It is worm gear drivin and replaces the carrier. I have one in the front of my jeep works very good. It is not a locker but it is the next best thing.

We blew up an Auburn in less than a year on a 1/2ton with a 454cid ~400hp..... all we did was plow and tow... . and of course blow off Rustangs... .

Matt

I have an Auburn in my F-150 and I like it.

But for my Ram, I think it is time to order the Detroit Locker I won in a drawing at the 4 Wheel Jamboree in Indy a couple years ago. Who has experience putting a Detroit Locker in a Dana 70 in a Ram?

Thanks.

Blake
