2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Does anybody make a tailgate cable that is

worth a crap????? I have replaced I think 3 pairs... . and no I don't slam it or drop it or carry some lard butt around..... but the plastic covering cracks and water gets in and they rust and break... ...



I was looking at the connectors and was wondering if you took them to a rigging place if they could replace the crappy wire with say stainless cable or something like that... ... ideas????

Don't see why not. Maybe go to a marine shop or something. They'd most likely have SS cable.

interesting I dont thing I have ever heard of this problem. I know my local co-op farmers store and coastal farmers store. they have spools of different size alum and ss cable can you salvage your end clips? if not I have seen universal ones at my local parts napa just dont know if they will work.

problem as they don't open their tailgate as much as I do. I have Labs that are with me almost all th etime and often they go in the back - when muddy - till they dry off... and then up front. I know that I open that tailgate at least a dozen times a day... ... . so maybe a year with me opening it that much is equal to a lifetime for most ?????

just realized your from camas. I did live in vancouver when i was A instructor at swan Island for the Marine Corps. I love it up there. let us know what you come up with. I looked at LMC Truck Parts: Chevy Chevrolet Blazer S10 GMC Jimmy S15 Ford Bronco Ranger Pickup Pick Up Accessories/Catalogs and looked to be the same size as the oem. sounds like your dogs are the owners of your truck always wanting a ride. our family breeds german Rotts and I have a 140lbs male he likes to go for rides but I have to pick him up or use the atv ramp due to my lift and my lazy dog.

Don't know if it might work, maybe you could make ones like the old dodges. My dad's old '82 ram was just 2 pieces of metal with a hinge in the middle. Not much to break there!

My original ones broke after a few years use, replaced with aftermarket ones from Ebay that claimed they were much stronger than oem. They are now 5 years old and still doing fine, you might try looking there. Good luck, Joe

Some years back, I was able to buy SS cable in various diameters, up to 1/2 inch, off spools at the local ACE hardware - they sold it by the foot. I bought about 25 feet of the 3/8 stuff for a radio tower winch, then never used it - it's out hanging in my garage - dunno if the SS in what I have would stand up any better to constant flexing than the OEM cable or not...

A little primer on SS cable: Usually comes with different strand makeup: 1x19, 7x7 and 7x19. 7x19 is the most flexible. SS cable also comes in different grades: 302/304 and 316 are most common. 302/304 is a little stronger than 316 but 316 is far more resistant to corrosion. Best bet would be 316 cable in a 7x19 layup. You can also find these cables in a marine store with a vinyl covering (lifeline wire).

my 01 has had a few sets the last set seems to be doing way better. The plastic hasn't cracked in a few years. Some of the others werre gone in less than a year. They were all OEM. Soon as someone is making somethig special and a one off the price is nuts. After market should make something better like SS.

I open my tailgate all the time too. I replaced my OEM ones with some from NAPA at least 6 years ago and they are still on the truck and don't show any signs of breaking soon.

Do you mean they have after market ones ???????? Wow, I'll check that out..... what I'd like to do is get the manufacture and purchase the ends, and then fabricate some SS Cables... ...

Yes they do have aftermarket ones. I think they had them on one of those turnstyle racks - they say something like "help" on them.
