has anyone who upped the timing to 15 or so, notice any increase in engine noise?

My Cummins mechanic says I'l regret it?

comments appreciated as I heard fuel mileage increase is worth the change.

thanks

At 15 degrees, no. And I don't agree with your Cummins mechanic either. It probably won't help MPG noticeably but you notice it's more responsive at midrange & higher RPM. If you have stock injectors on an Auto anything up to about 16* is good. Add bigger injectors later on and you could bump it up a little more.

It's the guys running a ton of timing like over 18* that start getting noisy and sound like a 24v. No thanks. Vaughn

I just recently advanced my timing close to 16* and I could not tell a difference in engine noise level. Definately a HP pick up midrange to top end as Vaughn stated.

I had mine bumped to 16 & my mileage improved by 1 mpg. The throttle responce is better & the power increase was noticable. It is slightly louder cold than it was before. I highly recommend having it done at a reputable shop. 15. 5 is supposed to be about right for best economy on a 215hp truck

my timing is at 23. 5* and yes it sounds like a 24v, you get used to it.

When your at a drive-in window and the sound is hurting your teeth..... it's high..... 16 is a good number for everyone... ... not too much noise!

It might not get noiser but when the mechanic screwed up my timing, the first thing I noticed was that it was ALOT quieter. He retarded it instead of advancing it. NOW, I AM MY OWN REPAIR STATION!

When I bought the 12V I checked timing because it was a pig, was at 10. 5, I bumped it up to 16. It did get louder but it wasn't such a slug. It was real quiet when the timing was retarded so much.

Now here is my question.

How much life are we taking out of our botttom ends by turning our timing up to almost twice what was recomended from the factory?

I guess my timing is in the 16 to 20 range. Yes it was very quiet and smooth when the timing was set below 10, and very noisy and rough turned up as high as it is now. but I love the throttle response and snatch out of the hole, off the line. I have the fastest truck out of my friends up until T/C lockup in Willysrig at about 65. He has a much faster top speed and I think someone installed a 3KGSK in his truck. Around town and in the hills on the twistys no compatition, on the highway he walks off and leaves me. Oh yea, his runs smooth and quiet, timing seems to be stock 12. 5 and EGT's run a little hot w/3. 55 gears and a tight convertor pushing 35 in tires. Mine runs cool w/4. 11 gears and a 5spd. Happy but concerned with the level of noise and rough feeling of the engine. I have given thought to turning it back down.
