To anyone thinking about bombing - don't think - just do it. I wish I would have years ago. But, I had to wait till I could do the trans. Sorry for the long post but as you can see I'm like a puppy in puberty that just realized he has two . . . well you know.
So, I put the sticks in Saturday and was very pleased with the outcome - sweet. Like driving a whole different truck, no doubt. Reminiscent of a 68 400 Firebird a friend had in school w/regards to the put back in the seat factor. EGTs climb pretty quick and the boost actually reached 24#, FP only dropped to 11# WOT - very happy.
Then today I put the comp box in and tapped the wire (I've read the VP horror stories after wire tap and figured - no guts no glory - if it goes all the better to do the HR-VP). So the test drive went as follows: - "and" the VP survived, so far. I started out apprehensively on 1-1, very nice improvement w/the sticks. Boost bumped to 28# FP down to 10#. Then 1-5, oh yea! better, and what's that black stuff coming out of the tail pipe??? Then 2-3, Yessir! boost and FP same, less smoke, but more ba*ls and push back in seat. 2-5 man. Tempted to go 5-5 held back though and went to 3-5 the smoke was great, boost to 30# and FP only down to 9 # then as I'm watching the boost it goes to 0#
then remembered this happening before - pulled over, located end of gauge hose under hood and trimmed the loose end off. By the way I forgot to mention the whistle that the turbo makes is almost scarry but definitely lets you know some power is "finally" happening under the hood. One more shot @ 3-5 to make sure all holds on - was that a bit of tire smoke??? Naw couldn't be. 4-3 incredible and theres still more? 4-5 oh baby, the front tires kind of got light steering due to transfer of weight ??? Never expected this? Then on to 5-3 Holy guacamole is this really my tug boat truck or am I dreaming that I'm back 20+ years ago in my buddies 440 GTX. Smoke was incredible, so was the boost just over 32#, FP no less than 8, egts approaching 1300 :--) ease off the pedal and they drop right down. Then on to 5-5 hold on, got kind of squirrelly, real powerful, the egts rocketed up, definitely a let off the pedal experience. However 5-5 is good for short bursts. 5-3 seems safer and about just as good.
So, like the big guy says (on one of the powerblock shows) "do you need all this power 'naw', do you want all this power 'ooh hohoyea definitely".
Even got a smile out of the wife, after I got home from the test drive, she was in the front yard - I stopped put it on 5-5 smiled at here and smoked up the whole neighborhood :-laf. I took her for a ride with the box off and then at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4 and 5-3, she started laughing and asked me "so what are you going to do with all your new found power"? After I stoped laughing I said go out and hunt some HEMIs and maybe play with a few rice rockets. It was a good ride we both laughed and best part was - she didn't even complain that I spent $ to get it, she did ask about all the fuel I'd be wasting though. Of course, I reminded her I didn't have to have the box on all the time and as long as I keep my foot out of it the mpgs would actually increase - I think she bought it
