How do you time a cummins?

Hey guys. My '93 has developed what seems to be a driveline vibration between 45 and 55 mph. The carrier bearing seems tight but where the slip shaft is there seems to be some slop. The truck is a C. C. 4x4 auto with 125,000 on it. Also the truck has a low idle to it and was wondering on how you adjust the idle, or is the govenor out of adjustment? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Slip yokes are common to have a bit of slop, but i have not noticed significant vibration from them unless they are really bad. My guess would be throw some new u-joints in there, after 120k and the torque of a cummins they are probably pretty done. It couldnt hurt, and they are not expensive. If it is still there then see if a driveline shop can ballance it or put a new slip on it if that is the source of vibration. Once you give a driveline to a shop, look at spending a hundred or two, because they will find something to change you.

I have found many medium to hight speed vibrations in the past to be due to tires, and not drivetrain. just a thought.

Idle adjustment is on the far side of the injection pump up against the cylinder head. Just tune it untill you get the idle you want.

I've had speed sensitive vibrations twice with mine and they were both solved by replacing a rim... one was bent, one wouldn't seat properly because the hole chamfers were shot. They were both on the rear axle. Both times the speed they would vibrate at was around 55/65

Hope this helps.
