Differential Oil Change Intervals.

Hey cj!

How many miles you figure you have on each rig, or in total, using this fuel (so far)?

Keep the updates coming - I've found a local source and will be following in your footsteps (small ones, in my case, being careful).

BTW - I scanned back trough all 7 pages and didn't spot any place you'd mentioned what the ratio of DSE additive was to the WVO (x oz per gal of wvo, or?)... same for the Power Service. Do you just follow the label instructions for Power Service?

Regards,

Mark

dse mix

Hello Mark

is this what you are looking for

10% kerosine up to 25% (winter blend)

5% reg unleaded gas

dse additive + power service (gray bottle)

05 gal = 1. 0 oz + 4. 0 oz

10 gal = 1. 5 oz + 7. 0 oz

15 gal = 2. 5 oz + 11. 0 oz

20 gal = 3. 5 oz + 15. 0 oz

25 gal = 4. 0 oz + 19. 0 oz

30 gal = 5. 0 oz + 22. 0 oz

35 gal = 6. 0 oz + 26. 0 oz

40 gal = 7. 0 oz + 30. 0 oz

45 gal = 7. 5 oz + 33. 0 oz

50 gal = 8. 5 oz + 37. 0 oz

good luck and have fun

what kind of oil are you looking for to use with this set up? hydrgenized? or somthing like that. any input would help thanks

cj,

Yes, that's what I'm looking for! Thanks.

Am I interpreting this correctly, that the % are based upon the WVO (before adding anything else) gallons...

So, if I have 10 gallons of WVO, I would add 1 gallon of Kerosene, 1/2 gallon of RUG, 1. 5oz of DSE, and 7oz of Power Service?

Thx,

Mark

oil supply

Hello Diesel Power

What you need to look for in oil is non hydrogenated oil, some call it clear cooking oil. when looking at the oil it should look like water no lumps no white just kinda looks like used motor oil.

the hydroge oil is thicker, sometimes called creamy oil,was a white look to it when its new used its just a lot darker.

find a chinese restaurant/a place that does chicken fried or brosted any smalll cafe they use the good oil. just ask the waiter what kind of oil they use then go from there.

if its the right kind of oil then ask to talk to the Owner ask him/her if they are paying to have the oil desposed of if they are then tell them you will take it away for them for free. I have never been told no at this point. where I live it costs about 35 bucks a month for that service. I save them 35 bucks and if they change there oil once a week at 10 gallons I save 40 gallons at 2. 50 a gallon so thats 100. 00 bucks,a month. I use around 35 to 40 gallons a week in one truck so it adds up fast

the only thing you need to do is pick up the oil when you say you will and some times eat at the places you pick up the oil from.

fuel /wvo pump

Hello all

Making more fuel today truck is running great.

The new pump for pumping out drums of oil is working better then I hoped for

first place had 30 gallons oil oil after hooking up hoses took 5 min to pump 25 gallons into 100 gallon tank in truck went to 2nd place and pumped 55 gallons out of their bin this took a little longer the battery was running low on power hooked to truck battery and finnished pumping this took 20 mins the total set up cost 1,150 dollars( pump cost the most) after running it I think it will pay for it self in little or no time to get 80 gallons before the pump it would take about 2 hrs of hand pumping.

The price includes tank, hose, camlock hose ends, pipe fittings, valves ,pump and shipping the hose is made for vegoil so it will last a long time. will try to post some pic of it the next time I use it.

also found another small oil supply (soy) its only 15 gallons a month.

Hey cj,

Finished my first (small) batch today - 2. 5Gal.

Used the pump from our old above-ground pool (1. 5" ID hoses!), with a home water filter from the local plumbing shop ($14 & $2. 44 for filter cartridges). Picked up a 50micron, 30micron, and 5micron filters for it. Mixed things in Rubbermaid 20gal garbage can (one to settle, one for mixing).

I added the 10% #1 and a little #2 to make filtering easier (it did). Once the pump was primed, I let it run around in circles for a while to make sure it was well filtered. That done, I mixed in the rest of the ingredients, filtered through a 5micron bag, and added to the tank.

A short driveabout was uneventful. I was watching the fuel pressure just in case I'd missed something in the filtering... no signs of distress thus far. Taking the trailer out on Thursday to head over the mountains for a Father's day outing - that ought to be interesting.

After fussing with this first setup (hoses loose into/out of the can) - I plan to plumb them in top and bottom with the pump below the can to aid priming, and to minimize the chance of a mess from hoses getting loose. I think I can get it plumbed well enough to make it routine. .

The place I get my AM coffee empties out their fryer every Sunday, and I pick it up every Monday on the way to work. They leave it in the original 5-gal tote (plastic, with handle & cardboard box outer jacket). Few more places like that and the $-per-gallon will definately drop. Oo. Good soy stock.

I'm pre-processing the oil by heating to cook off the water, mixing in calcium chloride (salt, basically) to draw off any remaining water in the oil, mixing in baking soda to neutralize acids and help clear our sediment, then dump it into the 20gal container with the calcium chloride and baking soda in the bottom to finish -- settle for a week or so, then filter as above. I picked up on the idea for soda & salt in a WVO forum...

I went and purchased a bottle of the DSE to see how difficult it would be to brew my own - I think it is essentially Xylene and Coleman fuel. I know how well Xylene dissolves waxes; I've used it for years to clean up candle messes and such. Suppose that's why it is used here, keeping things in solution as temps drop. I did poke around on the USPTO website, as I'd read they may have patented the formula. Someone had something similar (if it wasn't them), that was described as an additive to improve marginal feedstock in places around the world where fuel quality was low. Somewhere in there that particular patent listed the Xylene as around 50%. I think a lot of the other things listed are provided in the Power Service.

Anyhow, something new for Daddy to play with.

Stay tuned.

fuel

Hello All

Mark what was the final % of veg oil ? sounds like it worked ok.

Went on a trip to Helena Mt 550 Miles round trip running the blend fuel at 100 % RPMs at 2000 73 MPH MPG on highway is 21. 5 around town it falls to 18 was only there for overnight trip. The truck runs great and has 41000 miles on it and looking back when I started it had 28600 miles have run this fuel in different amounts for all of the time never below 50/50 blend but the trip to indy in nov 2600 miles. 9800 miles and the truck is running great the only thing is the fuel filters in the winter time plug at 20 Degs. Heating of the fuel tank should take care of this problem and this will be done before next winter making it work all year long with no problems is the plan .

Making more fuel this weekend. the pick up of oil is easer now with the new pump and tanks and I do not have to pour the oil in the heating tank this saves a lot of time and mess wish I would have done this a lot sooner.

thanks for reading

pump info

Hello bpine

I bought a Dixon Blade Master pump 12 volt 15gpm

it wll pump wvo and its not hard to move around the down side is the price

but I did get a deal on one

also got two tanks one 100 gallon tank for picking oil up and a 250 gallon tank for storage at my house also got some food grade hose for hooking up the tanks, pumps using camlock fittings can pull in to a oil pick up and pump the 55 gallon drums dry in about 6 to 10 min after getting there hooking up the hoses and the power. ball valves at the ends keep the spillage down and the cam locks make it fast.

the next time I use it I will get some pic and post them.

fuel

Hello All

This weekend I changed a few things on my mixing unit.

Took off the pvc ball valves/all of the abs fittings and replaced them with bronze ball valves and black steel pipe fittings also replaced the black mixing drum with a steel 55 drum.

The pvc was starting to leak and the ball valves were getting hard to turn

the gasoline/kero/powerservice/dse mix makes the pvc swell up and leak

also had to change a fuel filter on the 04 would not rev past 2100 rpm changed and found it dirty and pluged look at log and found that I replaced it it mid jan so I got about 4 months out of the filter, thinking I got some hydrogenated oil in my tank from some where. I will just burn it all up not going to worry about it for now. its warm here so it should burn ok.

the truck is running great loving the fact that I get 20 miles to the gallon highway also that its only 70 cents a gallon to make.

Need to buy a drum of kero this week so I can make more fuel the last drum bought was 10/26/05 this amount of kero will make 18 batchs of fuel 30 gallons at a time so thats around 540 gallons of fuel.

picking up oil this week, will try to post pic of wvo pump and hoses later this week.

fuel cost /savings ?

Hello all

just got back with a 55 gallon drum of kero

price is high summertime is not the right time to buy only one place had it

55 gallon drum = 220. 21 thats a little over 4. 00 per gallon

so my new cost per gallon of blend fuel is =. 63 per gallon

ps = . 11 per oz 22 oz = 2. 42

dse = . 64 per oz 5 oz = 3. 20

gas = 2. 66 per gallon 1. 5 gallons = 3. 99

kero = 4. 00 per gallon 3 gallons = 12. 00

wvo = free

total cost for mix 21. 61

34. 5 gallons of usable fuel

. 6263 per gallon

I think the dse needs to be cheaper this will be the next step to get the cost down

at . 64 cents per oz thats 81. 92 per gallon will be working on this to get the price down

also i have 1500 is the mixing unit and 1400 in the waste veg oil punp and tanks this is not counted in the total cost per gallon if it was the cost per gallon would be at 6. 00 per gallon but I think it will last 10 to 15 years if not longer so the cost is not included. You dont need this much to do the oil but it makes it a lot faster and with less mess

savings so far i think it depends on how you look at it I look at it this way

540 gallons of #2 at pump price = 1565. 46

540 gallons of blend fuel = 340. 20

savings of 1225. 26 for fuel only

cj,

From the ingredients on the label it would seem to be a mixture of Xylene (hardware store/NAPA) and Coleman lantern fuel (Naptha). . and though it's not on the label, the red stuff could be MMO (!).

Anyhow, I've used Xylene for years to get candle wax out of carpets, off floors, dissolve gums, etc. I can see how that stuff could slow crystalization of the wax when it gets cool.

If you test it like you did the various mixes this past winter, once you find the right ratio, you may not be able to tell the difference... that's my goal, anyhow.

OTOH, neither hardware store Xylene nor Coleman fuel are cheap!! I suppose if you picked up a large enough quantity you could fix that too.

fuel update/trip

Hello all

Hope all of you had a good 4 th of July.

Went to the Black Hills of South Dakota Sunday it has changed alot last time I was there in the early 70's, thats life.

the truck ran great going down I got my new tires 285/70-19. 5 on it so my mileage is a little differnt not sure how to drive the truck I can run 75 mph at 1800 rpm and get about 14. 4 mpg or run 80 mph at 1950 rpm and get 13. 9 mpg this is with #2 only the blend fuel was used up on the way down and I was trying to get used to the way the truck drives with the new size wheels and tires. think it will take some time getting used to this but so far I like the way it drives. before 80 mph was 2200 rpm's.

Blending more fuel today and going to get more oil today also

fuel in South Dakota is running 3. 099 per gallon

fuel in Wy is 2. 959 per gallon and fuel in Billings is 2. 859 some places.

I did have about 15 gallons of blend fuel ready to burn so its back on blend.

cj hall

Hello cj,

I mixed up 10 gallons of blend & took the fam' and trailer up to the Olympic Penninsula for the holiday. Ran great - I got about 14. 5 for the towing.

Wish I could say the same for my tires!! Must've hit a pothole or something; I lost one up by Lilliwaup on the way up, and another in Olympia on the way back (just lost the tread/belts on one & got a big bubble on the other). Maybe they're just getting old? It's a 1999/2000 trailer.

Fortunately, Wally Mart is open on the 4th!!!

weekend mileage

Hello all

Went to Livingston Montana 115 miles one way this weekend with the 04 and drove up at 80 mph rpms at 1950 the mileage was 17. 9 per gallon running dse fuel at 100% Running back to billings we ran 75 mph, rpms at 1800 and got 21. 1 mpg also had my wifes 05 do the same trip she drove up at 75 and returned at 75 and she got 16 mpg both ways she is running #2

her rpms 2100 rpm's. I sure like those new tires.

the 04 is running great on this fuel its going in for a oil change this week and will be taking a sample of oil to have it tested to see if any thing is going on in the engine also have a lead on some one to pull an injector to check for anything going bad there. this might take a few weeks to get this all done.

will post as soon as I find anything out.

What size tires on the 05? How tall are the 285/70/19. 5? Do you tow Heavy with the 19. 5's?

Just bought 5 - 19. 5 rims but haven't gotten tires yet.

cj,

While you're checking things out, see if they can run a bore scope through the injector hole and check for deposits, or anything unusual on the cylinder walls.

Checking the oil is a good idea.

Sounds like things are going well. I found a source here locally that can provide more than 50 gals a week. I'll be increasing use of the oil shortly... make hay will the sun's shining, right?!
