Slight problem this morn..... turned on e-brake and NOTHING!!! Checked wiring, hoses, fuse, etc. Nothing wrong!!! Tapped fuel pedal and VOLIA!!! it "kicked" in. Wonder why when I started the eng that the brake didn't come on as normal - idle wasn't up any more than usual (warmer morns - 45deg this morn and yesterday), but somehow the ECM thought it was "fueling" and until I "reset" the idle it didn't kick in. Any ideas?????

I put the Pac-Brake on my '97 about a year ago, and I added a 'monitor' light, to tell me when the brake is actually closed. Just add another wire from the vacuum solenoid back into the cab, and mount a 12v panel light somewhere to your liking. Now when power is applied to the solenoid, it lights the 'monitor' light. Also makes it easy to diagnose problems with accelerator switch, or ECM signal. (for awhile, I had a problem with the accelerator switch not closing a higher RPM's)

Does anyone know how the braking horsepower of the E-brake compares to the BD or the PacBrake?

The e-brake is at 140rhp and the BD and Pac are about 190rhp. I put on the Pac. I love it and it only cost $678 shipped to my front door. I also used a two speed axle switch on my shifter for it, couldn't imagine the pain of reaching down to turn it on and off.

Don't understand why you turn it on and off. I leave mine on all the time. Saves wear and tear on the service brakes. In my case switch location not a big deal, but just for the record, I mounted mine on the 4 wheel drive shift lever.

I turn mine off when I am upshifting or stopped at a light. I always turn it on to slow down.

I purchased the Cummins E-brake several years ago for my "97" and at that time the rhp was 190 at 2900 or 3000rpm.

My switch is to the left of the fog lamp switch. I leave it on all the time including 2 to 3 minutes idle warmup, except when I am anticipating curves that do not require the e-brake,just compression, to save a little fuel mileage. (sometimes leave it on just to hear it activate)

Would not want to do without it!!!!!

Based on the favorable recommendations from Bill Stockard and Phil Rauch, I purchased the Pacbrake. Installed it yesterday. The installation time was exactly 3 hours and 5 minutes. Now that I'm "experienced", I could probably install the next one in a couple hours.
The unit and all components installed just like the well documented instructions from Pacbrake said. No problems. No additional parts or supplies needed.
I have only used the brake with the empty truck, not towing, but I can tell you that it works very well. The only thing I don't like is the new sound (sort of a hiss) that I hear when the brake is on and the engine is at idle. I don't expect this to be a problem since the only time this occurs is during engine warmup.
I plan to hook on to the trailer this weekend and see how well the Pacbrake retards with a real load on. Will post results/impression later.

Question for you E-brake users. This weekend I installed Cummins p/n:3800780 E-brake kit on my 2001 6-speed. Everything went real well, the instructions were excellent. I too had problems getting the new wire into the right pin on the ECM (took some study while head-first in engine compartment). Also, undoing the Cig-liter from dash took time to figure out. In all, went well. HERE's the question; When I first turned it on and went for a test drive, it all seemed to work as advertised, really slows you down!, what I'm not sure is normal is that there is a HISS that the engine makes at idle with the e-brake is on, that goes away when you accellerate off of idle. Is this normal? Seems like I read a thread sometime ago that that hiss is some of the exhaust escaping past the almost totally closed buterfly in the e-brake elbow, and is normal. Just wanted to hear what you guys that have them might know about this. Everything else seems to work well. Thanks for anu help, and sorry for the long post. - Wet Willie

Wet Willie,

If you looked at the butterfly before you instlled the E-brake you will have seen about a 1/2" hole in it. This is to releave a little pressure when it is in the closed position. This is what is causing the hissing noise that you are hearing and yes it is normal. It comes in handy when a kid pulls up along side you at a stop light with his boom box blasting.

Guys, thanks for the replies. I feel better now! Kevin you pointed out a real good "feature" this offers to the clowns that pull up next to you with their windows down so you can hear their sub-woofer, even when it's nipple cold outside!

Thanks! -Wet Willie

Towed a load with over 24000 GCVW. Pacbrake really made a difference. I can't believe I've gone without one this long. If you tow heavy loads, get one! I should have had one 10 years ago on my first diesel pickup.
