I found the problem...

If you don't know, you can replace that yourself and use AlfaOBD to calibrate the new one. Provided the turbo is ok and free.

Earl
I do know, this one is under warranty and does not require calibration. The turbo is fine, so at least I’ve got that going for me!!

So, components on the board were shorting out against the gear cover?
Hmm...
You'd think that would be insulated so it wouldn't be possible.
You'd also think that would post a code.

I would say the components blew on the board and arced/blew smoke and slag on the cover.

Looking at it up close, I don’t think it touched the cover. I think that’s just from the flash over from something shorting out.
I hooked a Mac Scout to the truck today and there were no codes. I agree, there should have been some code.

Tramplineman What are you going to do with that circuit board? My brother would like to analyze it . He is an electrical design engineer, I'll pay for shipping . I told him of all the failures. Was there any insulation between bottom of board and the aluminum ?

I’ll probably have to return it to City Diesel as it’s still under warranty. If they don’t want it back, I will ship it to you. I’m not sure if there is insulation between the bottom of the board and the aluminum half it’s attached to, but there is no insulation between the top side of the board and the aluminum half it get married to.

Looks like some stripped gear teeth too. Might have been some sort of binding to cause it to "blow".
We kinda thought that too, maybe the binding of the gears caused overheating of the board? When it was on the truck you couldn’t tell anything was wrong by looking at it. As soon as I broke the seal between the two halves you could immediately smell that an electrical fire had occurred.

Maybe metal fragments from the stripped gear teeth shorted out the circuit card?

Possibly...but I can't help but think whatever load/binding that caused those teeth to strip, likely overloaded the transister....or whatever burned up.

I suppose the opposite scenario is possible too....something in the electronics failed in the "on" position, forcing the gears to push against the limit of the actuator, causing additional electrical burn-up. Just thinking out loud.
