Is it possible for an Edge EZ to go bad?

I put one on my truck about a month ago and everything was fine until just the other day. While cruising on a flat highway, unloaded, at 65 mph the truck was "surging" a little. It almost felt as if I was thumping on the throttle, but I wasn't.

I changed my fuel filter and even swapped in my spare lift pump. My fuel pressure would drop a lb or two evey time it surged. Neither of these helped. Then I reverted my truck back to the stock configuration and prest-o-change-o, it was cured. The EZ was on the factory setting. So, I set it to the lowest level and it runs fine there. What gives?

Anyone have any luck actually talking to a person at Edge? Over three different days, I left several messages and spent about an hour on hold.

Thanks,

Ian

The problem is the cruise controll as the ECM is used to a certain level of power for maintaining speed. its worse on hills. .

take the hose for the cuise controll, the vaccum one and cut it and insert a sraw like the ones for lube spays, and reconnect using either elec. tape or duct tape as it will pull together and seal. . this will slow the reaction of the cruise controll and stablize it.

His HO doesn't have a vacuum cruise control. But, along those lines, does it surge with the cruise on? The reason I ask, is that if your APPS (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor) is starting to flake out, the EZ could amplify the fluctuations. And when the cruise in engaged on an HO the APPS is bypassed.

So if the surging goes away with the cruise on, that would point pretty solidly to the APPS.

It doesn't surge with the cruise on. It hasn't surged since I changed the power setting either(about 400 miles since I changed setting).

Is the apps like a throttle position sensor? Or is it attached to the pedal like it sounds? Expensive? Difficult to change?

Thanks again,

Ian

If it surges without the cruise on, and stops surging once the cruise is turned on, then it probably is the APPS (on trucks without vacuum cruise).

The brushes/contacts in the APPS wear out first where the throttle spends the most time (cruise speed). In the case of my truck, a couple hundred RPM on either side of cruise smoothed things out.

It's a bit pricey at about $370 (I purchased mine from Hoesli Diesel), but at least it's easy to change. The APPS is actually mounted on the front of the engine, just above the injector pump. Three bolts hold it in place, and the rotating mechanisim has a black plastic cover.

Mine started flaking out a little after 80k miles. It wasn't a show stopper, but the surging was annoying.

Thanks for the info PC12.

I replaced the APPS the other day and what a difference. Cost me $403 out the door. What are you gonna do?

Thanks,

Ian
