ok Ihave thought about a couple diffrant shut down methods one is the air trap onthe turbo and the other is a shut off valve between the filter and the P-pump. any body know how long the eng will run on the fuel that is in the P-pump thank George

the only reason I have heard for run-aways is by sucking in "fuel" from the intake, usually a leaking turbo seal. Cutting off the fuel won't help in that case.

Just from what I've seen at the tractor pulls. Most of your super farm,Super stock and so on. Have a cap that flips down and blocks the intake to the turbo. This cap is tripped by a wire attached to the sled. Just in case the tractor becomes disconnected from the sled. The operator can also trip the cap manually in case the enigine runs away.

Kinda looks like a rain cap on the tip of an exhaust stack.

The only relatively sure way to shut down a diesel is to cut off the air. As has been said, turbo seal failures, shaft failures, running into a pocket of methane or other hydrocarbon gas or anything else that can introduce fuel into the airstream will be used as a fuel source by the engine, so cutting off fuel in these circumstances will not guarantee an engine shutdown.

Large industrial diesel engines generally have spring-loaded butterfly valves in each bank's air manifold that will slam shut in the event of an engine overspeed.
