It's a 2000.
So JR, I'm handy on the truck, but not a mechanic. You recommend I get with a diesel mechanic and have them check the injectors:
- check for leaky injector tube o-ring
- stuck injector
- any fuel pooling in oil around injector
- replace cross over tubing

Is this all they need to do? Am I better off getting a new injector set, along with the seal kit you mentioned, rather than depending on them? Sometimes I've heard they won't warranty any parts I would supply, since they didn't purchase them....

Injectors are a straight forward job, there's lots of good step by step write ups on how to do them. But that is entirely up to you. If you take it to a shop they will almost definitely try to sell you on a set of new injectors wether you need them or not. Most shops don't want your truck tied up in their bay while they send your injectors out to be tested. Time is money and they will make more dropping in a new set and getting you on your way. Again, entirely up to you but If you can do them yourself and are otherwise happy with the performance I would study up on it and tear into it. Pop testing is inexpensive and you only replace the bad injector vs all 6. You may not even have any that are bad and the leak is in an o ring or connection.

This probably goes without saying but you should stop driving the truck until you get this sorted. Oil that diluted could definitely damage your engine.

Thanks. I will probably get with a local diesel shop, as I just don't have the time to work on it. Unfortunately, its our second vehicle and my wife is at home and normally uses it. I'll tell her to limit the trips until we get it in the shop.

Agree completely with Steve, but If you must drive it I would change the oil again. Its only going to get worse as you run it and it's already grossly overfilled for the amount of miles you've got on it. Go buy the cheapest 15w40 you can find. I wouldn't worry about the filter.
I know it's extra money at this point but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than an $8k reman engine.

I agree. There's a diesel shop about 5 miles away. I'm going to check on access Monday, and meet them to discuss the problem. I'll get my wife a rental while its in the shop.

Well I finally got this resolved (I think). I sent it to a local diesel shop and they confirmed our TDR diagnosis. It was the o-rings on the injectors and cross tubes. They put in an injector reseal kit, adjusted the valves, oil change and filter, and new valve cover gaskets. Damage wasn't too bad, considering it could have been a replacement engine. See the attachment.

I would like to thank JR especially for his insight into the problem. He hit it exactly. I've ran it since Thursday now and not engine leaks, oil is right in the middle of the dip stick range. I'll continue to monitor, but I think its fixed.

Thanks again to the great TDR readership who came to the across again (seven times for me so far!)
