Blowby manometer

The one thing on making your own Nanometer tool, get 7 ft of tubing, measure and mark at 3 ft and 6 ft. Find a board to mount it to, the 3 ft mark is the bottom of the "U". Then line up the 6 ft mark and end of tube for your top line. The extra amount of tubing helps with connecting. This is how the one the I used was made for small engine repair, and it was provided by manufacture as special tool. You can put all you measurement line on the board in 1/4" increments. That way, you wont have to put a tape to it. You can mark 18" mark for where water should be for test. When done with "new" tool, hang on shop wall and wait for the comments. You can tell them it's a "gas" pressure measurement tool. :D

I tested my Crankcase breather element this morning, by resting the oil filler cap on the opening. It sits on top calm as can be, even when I rev the engine. But, after reading things here, I got a little paranoid. So, I ordered a new Crankcase Breather Element.
How hard are they.to get to, on my 2006?? I cannot find pictures of it on the engine, on the internet. No videos either. My 06 has around 187,000 miles.
Also, the element I ordered was $21, vs. the $147 for a Mopar one.

Your engine cleared the test, no further investigation is needed here.

Easy to replace, on a scale from 1 to 10 this is a 1 for everyone.
I run an aftermarket part to, works good, but, I had to replace the O-Ring on it shortly after as it was a tad to small an let some oil through onto the valve cover. So I measured it and ordered one size up. Now it is perfect.

Calling this part a filter is somewhat misleading as it is exactly an oil/air separation unit and therefor it can be bought aftermarket as good as factory.

I don't think it can be cleaned properly to remove all residues out of its gaze construction. Replacement is the way to go.

Thank you. It was a relief not to see that oil cap bouncing around. This is not a daily driver, but will be used more when I retire in a couple of years. I just want to make it as reliable as possible.

Just to be clear, the air/oil separator on you 2006 is different than the 2005 and prior 3rd gens. It is attached to the underside of the raised portion of the valve cover. You have to remove the valve cover to get to it and it is attached with security torx screws. You can get the security torx bits off Amazon cheap. I have never seen where you can purchase this air/oil separator independent of the valve cover making replacement very expensive. I checked with the dealer (Mopar) and Cummins. I cleaned mine during my rebuild and it flowed freely. If you have no blowby or excessive oil coming out of the larger of the two fittings through the atmospheric tube you likely don't have any restriction as Ozy stated.

Thanks for the clarification here, I forget about that fact that they changed this detail for the last production year.

So, maybe, I'm just guessing here, if this version is the one mentioned above with just baffles and such inside it can be flushed out with a solvent.

This is what the one for the 2006 looks like. If need be, I do own the "Security " Torqx Bits. I had to by them many years ago, for another vehicle, maybe my 1998 Wrangler. Silliest thing I've seen made. At the time, they were a PITA to find.

That looks like the 03-05 version.

The 06-07 5.9’s had them integrated into the valve cover, which is listed as a non-repairable item and a new valve cover must be purchased.

Maybe someone has figured it out since I last researched it.

This is what I recall the 06-07 5.9 being. It’s similar to the photo above, but not the same.

That's what my 2006 looks like. Four security bit screws attach it to the underside of the valve cover. Note the O rings on the protruding ends.View attachment 142443

Thanks guys. The one that comes in our 06 looks completely different than the ones that they are out there selling as 06's.
Now I know.
I still can't see why that would cost $150.

When I removed mine for cleaning it had no restriction at all. You cannot see the inside so not sure what media it has. I think I cleaned it with Dawn dish soap.
