I recently purchased a 2004.5, 2500, 4x4, quad cab, long box. As far as I know it is completely stock. it currently has 142,000 miles I bought it with 138,000.

I have been driving it highway and interstate, virtually all 4,000 miles. I change the oil the same day I bought the truck and have had to add about 1-1.5 quarts of oil per 1,000 miles driven.

I have been looking up different discussions on this topic, and have found everything from its normal to it's about time for an over hall.
**as a note, the truck does smoke. More than I would expect for a stock truck. Dark brown smoke, no white or blue mixed in, that I can see.**

My questions are:

1) is this a normal consumption of oil for hiway speeds unloaded?

If not,

2) am I due for a valve job soon?

3) I read about the turbo seal leaking into the exhaust. How do I go about checking that?

Any ideas and thoughts and experiences with this welcome. Thanks

As a rule Cummins engines do not use any oil between changes. Pop your oil fill cap off when it's idling and see how much blow by it has. If someone was running a non paper filter it may be dusted and require a set of rings. They also generally do not need valve jobs. The turbo could be bad, but you will know as soon as you check the blow by.

If you used 1-1.5 qts in 7k mile oil changes that would be normal or close to it.

Oil consumption and a lack of much blow by is usually a broken ring or 2.

So I took the oil cap off, and there is some faint white/blue smoke ( which I assume means blow by).

What steps to check the turbo? There is no oil leaking in on the filter side.

What is my next step? In guessing it would be impractical to just have rings done.

Not really, if that is all that is bad. Faint trail of smoke is not unusual out the oil cap. Run the engine at 1500 rpms and check for pressure out the oil cap, especially a variance you can feel or puffs of smoke. A broken ring will frequently not show at idle where it gets more obvious with rpm. Sometimes. A compression test will tell you more.

What do you mean by faint? Is it lingering or being forced out of the oil cap?

Broken rings will burn oil at the rate your are describing and if it is running smooth the blowby will not be severe but it will be there. We just went thru this on my dads 06 with 123K miles in June.

Agree on the broken ring or too. If the engine is actually dusted from improper air filtration , chances are high it will require 1st oversize bore to true up cylinders with accompanying new pistons and rings

What brand of oil are you using? How much oil did you put in during the oil change?

Does the dipstick appear to be OEM? Is there a part number on it?
