Ok guys..... Have a problem and I discussed it on here a couple of weeks ago. My stacks emit a very loud and obnoxious squealing noise when the E-Brake is activated. I have heard from BD and they insist an exhaust leak is causing this and that should NOT be hearing this noise..... only a pshhhhhhhhh noise!! I did find one bad leak in the downpipe and a minor leak on the inlet port of the brake itself. I have re-sealed both and cannot feel any leaks at all. The noise is still there and very loud and obnoxious. I have no muffler or anything from the downpipe back. They are 5" stacks and I have the twin turbos from BD.

My question is this..... Is this normal? BD has stated more than once that I should not be hearing this noise. I cannot find or feel anymore exhaust leaks..... it is completely sealed now. If this squealing IS normal, will the resonators that fit inside my stacks solve my loud sqealing??

TIA

Alan

An exhaust brake is NOT a jake brake. A Jake brake activates valves in a specific order to create braking force while exhaust brakes restricts the exhaust from the turbo to create back pressure to accomplish the retardation.

Alan, it's not normal, and it's not the exhaust brake. Mine did the same exact thing when i put a new turbo in. I tightened the crap out of everything, even broke a couple clamps thinking it was either downpipe/exhaust brake related. Turned out to be the turbo to manifold gasket. The last place i would have thought, go figure. Mine was a screeching kind of noise like if you were let air out of a balloon through a tightly closed opening but on a much grander scale. At any rate that's what fixed mine.

Thanks for the help. I need to find this leak then because I love the brake but just cannot stand the noise it emits. It is very loud... . sort of a 'train whistle' like squealing noise. Is there an easier way to check for exhaust leaks? I have the twins so I have more areas to check. I don't even see any evidence of any more leaks... . no soot or anything.

Alan

Start the truck, at idle engage the exhaust brake and start feeling around for exhaust gasses being pushed out. Black soot where it is not supposed to be is a good indicator. In the engine compartment can get a little tricky with the fan running, so either remove the fan blade or serpentine belt (do not run more than a couple of minuets sans belt).

I am almost sure you can adjust the noise out by either going tighter or looser but you will need a gauge.
