Breakaway Trailer Brake System

back in the late 90s early 2000 we had 4 bd brakes on 12v and 24v engines, they were the vacuum operated and took place of the stock exhaust elbow. we had nothing but problems, from stickin on or not workin at all. now we have pacbrake, they work great with no problems. i know the technology has improved since then but i like the packbrake.

I have had the PRXB on my truck for a couple of years without a problem. I use it all the time weather I am towing my 5th wheel or not.

the pax and bd work equally well i have a preference of the db over the pac because of where the compressor mounts. over the life of the truck you are going to have a lot less compressor maintenance and cost with the bd and the bd is out of the way when you are trying to work under the hood

BD is no longer vucuum operated. I've ran a BD for 100K miles without a hitch.

I like the solid butterfly on the BD. All other use a variable orfice (more moving parts) in the butterfly which I think is one more thing to go wrong

as jhawes said less moving parts is another reason we are using more bd's also as mentioned get the shifter mounted switch when you order

I put over 200K on my BD brake. Had to clean the pivot point once or twice a year. Other than that it was perfect. If it was a turbo mount instead of inline, I probably wouldn't even done that.

I prefer the BD brake over the one on my 6. 7 even.

aaben the next time the vacuum pump fails on the jake just throw it away and go bd. the bd will slow you down a lot better and no pump failure to strand you out in the middle of no where.

I have been running a bd on my 2001 for 80,000 miles with no problems.

I bought a Pac Brake for my 2005 and returned it because of the close tolerance on installation. I was concerned about rattles or wear down the line. The bd installed very easy and works better than the one on my 2001.

Just my two pesos.

JSchooley, what about a 2005 with a manual transmission?

I have a 3500 with a NV5600, does anyone know if this is a potential problem.

I was planing on the PAC with the 100% duty cycle compressor. Someone mentioned mounting the compressor on the wheel well, does anyone know about this as well?

Thanks so kindly,

Cee

My 2001 is a manual and I have had no problems.

Your 2005 should have no problems at all. Mine is an automatic and I needed to figure out how to get it to shift down when I wanted it to. With the automatic I also needed to buy the transmission controller. That was another reason why I returned the Pac Brake. I was told that the transmission control was included with the kit but found out I needed to spend big bucks for it. I was familiar with the BD products and felt more comfortable going that way.

The compressor in the bd turns on only on demand and usually runs for a few seconds at a time.
