Since my purchase used 2 years ago the oil pressure has gone down one half

a notch. Used to be straight up and now has dropped back to the line just left of center. Does anyone know for sure what numbers the lines on the guage

stand for. I would like to know what pressure I am running and how much I have lost. 250k + the original 150k some loss may be normal but I would feel better knowing the numbers. RC

There is a very good chance that the drop is a loss in the sender and not really a loss of pressure or flow of oil. The senders go bad. Look at the pics of the bearings from Marks (flex plate woes) post. That engine has over 400k miles and the bearings and journals look super.

The sender is on the side of the block near the injection pump. About as big around as a fifty cent piece and two to three inches long. It has a wire connection that goes to the gage (maybe through the conputer but I don't know about that).

You could install a tee there and plumb a mechanical gage in the system to be sure or just check and replace the sender if it is defective.

Things do sometimes go awry but I doubt it is the oil pump faliling.

There is no definate correlation between the hash marks and oil pressure numbers, sorry. Get yourself a real oil pressure gauge if you want numbers.

Get the guage

My sender went out partway so the guage read low and the light acted fine. Later the light acted like my oil pressure wasn't good. The sender was my problem.

To test, I had an oil pressure guage that was tapped in at the plug on top of the oil filter. Easy access and no tee necessary. I was really relieved to know the actual pressure.

Sender was cheap at carquest, but I went with cummins anyway. I compared the two senders and although compatible, (and I have no idea if it makes any difference at all) the off brand wasn't physically as heavy duty. No surprises eh??

BTW. oil sensor goes directly to the guage in 92 no computer involvement. I think all 1st gen are so.

Oil pressure
