Here's one for you . Stopped at the first street light on the way home from fishing yesterday in Heber City, Ut. Sitting there waiting for the light to change foot on the brake ,and all of a sudden truck started moving. Pressed on the brake harder, and it stopped, didn't think too much of it thought I may of let off some. Light change started thru the intersection, and it took a slight right turn, could hardly get the wheel to move, I was in the right lane, moved over to the shoulder, and it took both feet to even get the truck stopped.

Luck would have it I was probably less then a half a mile straight down the street to a Ram dealer, got it there, got the service guy out, told him what was going on, popped the hood, he was calling it the fan hub pulley, whatever it was, it was hanging loose. He knew from what I told him .He said he had only seen this happen on one or two other trucks. The pulley is held on by what he said was six 8MM bolts . All were out, some sheared off he said, some fell out.

Anyway, he didn't have the bolts, too late in the day, got them this morning ,truck is fixed ,and back home. Pulley was okay ,belt okay, nothing damaged. It didn't make a sound when that pulley let loose. It stopped fine at the light , in that time period waiting for the light , it came loose.

That dealer is 60 miles from where I live, I have dealt with them before, they were the only ones around that had a water pump for the recall in house, so again on the way fishing awhile back :) I made an appointment stopped there first thing in the morning, was out of there, and on the way fishing around 10:00 am. My point mentioning this ,IMO they are are second to none in their service department, thats difficult to say these days. Klaxton on here recommended them on the recall. Anyone needing a Ram service department in the Salt Lake area, Heber is a bit out of the way, but they do strive to take care of you . I showed up at 2:00 pm yesterday, and they got parts ,and had me worked in ,and done at noon today. and they looked busy.

The dealership is Karl Malone ,the basket ball player.

Man was someone looking after you! That could have been a nightmare giving traffic and location. Glad you found a good dealer to take care of it. Guess some people maybe going out and checking the torque on this pulley. I know I am. Thx for sharing the great experience with the dealer. I know I have found one in Scottsdale I like and they are approximately 250 miles form where I live. Good news is I am in that area once a month.

We need to know when a decent service department is found, and share. Heber is a busy town, and quite a bit of traffic there on main street. Yes, I was lucky, that truck did not stop well getting it that half mile to the dealer, nor was it easy to steer. I was lucky that no one was in front of me at the light, not sure I could of stopped in time at the light if it happened sooner, this event was only seconds apart. I hate the thoughts of having my fifth wheel hooked up when this happened.

As far as getting to that pulley, not sure how easy, you can barely see down in there. I did ask him if this is something to be checked, he said it was not. He even repeated it today, he had only seen one or two that that has happened , but he is just one service department. He told me the fan had to be removed to get in there, it was a 2 hour job according to the bill. Anyway new bolts, and he said he used locktite on them . I will look a littler closer to see if I can get to them to check, just happy its fixed :)

Maybe someone has had this happen and can chime in, it sure doesn't sound common.

Its not common apparently , but it happened for whatever reason , not torqued properly , no locktite, have no idea, neither did the service guy.

As far as checking ,it would not hurt . It doesn't look like a very easy place to get to .

Same but different, I had an issue with my '96, I accidentally loosened them when I changed my old school fan clutch we have on these 12V.

I put paint marker on my bolts after I made the fix.

Here is the thread someone else had a similar issue on a different maybe a 3rd gen.

If this is different set up then please disregard.

Thanks,Yup, same thing, there is a picture of it on that thread, got the six bolts and all. They reported some noise ,and belt damage, non of that with mine, at least I was told there was not. Makes me a little leery on the belt, but I am sure they would of been happy to sell me a new one if needed. May just change the belt anyway.

No problems in nearly 50K with the Y-pipe, but its getting changed also .

My bolts came out as well. I was having the water pump recall done & they noticed it. all the bolts had backed out. 1 was gone.

Its possible mine were starting to come loose at that point, but apparently they were not checked. Looks to be something to keep an eye.
