Ran the dog-poo out of it...
Fellers - I love my truck -
Just wanted to give y'all an "ataboy Cummins" story. I left Montgomery, AL this Friday at 4:15 pm. Drove to Alpharetta and picked up an item there.
Drove non-stop from there with the item in the bed of my truck, all the way to Detroit airport area at about 9am. No sleep.
Went to my previous house in Tecumseh, MI and bought the neighbors 24' enclosed trailer. Put the item in the enclosed trailer. No sleep.
Drove from there in MI without any sleep, through OH (Columbus, Akron), through PA on I-80 (absolutely beautiful country, but the interstate is like a combat zone on the eastern side - I think I jumped all 4 truck tires and all 4 trailer tires off the ground once or twice), into NJ, into a town called Bedminster. Picked up another item there and headed toward MD. Haven't slept yet, yawn yawn.
Got on the NJ turnpike (I-95), stopped at the 1st service center for fuel and slept from 1:30 am to 4 am. I slept in the trailer by putting down 2 blankets, a 3rd blanket to cover up, and 2 pillows. Temps were around 60F. Good sleepin' temps. Slept good for 2. 5 hours, except once the trailer side door blew wide open. I couldn't shut it completely from the inside (basically new trailer, no door mods yet, but forth coming).
Drove from 4 am to 6 am to Elkton, MD where I dropped off the Alpharetta item. Drove to Hamlin, MD and picked up a car. At that point had a car and another item in the trailer.
Drove from MD to Ringgold, GA area and got a few items from my parents' house I had stored there.
Drove on to Montgomery, AL. Got there at 1:15 am (Monday). Went to work Monday morning. Real productive on Monday, I tell ya what!
The jist of all this is, that yes I was beat. But that Cummins just kept asking for more. I ran 75 - 78 in TN & GA (where the speed limit is 70), and the Cummins just ate it up. I LOVE THIS TRUCK. I've had it new since '99, but it seems like a new truck to me, and I'm in love with it now as much as I ever had. My wife has good reason to be jealous.
I got somewhere in the neighborhood of 13 - 15 mpg running between 70 and 78, pulling in the neighborhood of about 8,000 lbs.
I don't advise this kind of running for anyone. And I did think towing faster than 70 felt like a bit too much. But I was ready for it to be over with and wasn't about to slow down.
That's somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,600 to 2,700 miles. I did it in about 56 hours. That's about 47. 3 mph average. Fellers I hauled a$$ and that Cummins never missed a beat. And I think it got exception fuel mileage, and pulled like a mad dog. Not 1 single hill I encountered couldn't be pulled in 6th. Did I mention I love this truck? The engine could be twice as loud at idle, and I wouldn't care.
