Tandem Trailers?

B & W Gooseneck & Companion 5th Wheel

Need some advice--I'm looking to buy a toolbox/storage box for behind the 5th wheel hitch (tailgate box). I was initially planning on buying the V style box, as I figured it would have more storage space, but after diligent research I found there's limited options (Better Built at Camping World and Unique Manufacturing out of Sturgis, MI). The flat style "Partner Box" is the other option, but less room for storage. I'm running a long bed and usually only tow the 5th wheel, so I'm not worried about bed space. I have a 34' Montana with an extended pin box with plenty of bed rail clearance. The big question is does it interfere with the pin box, are there any striking/denting hazards that I'm not taking into consideration? Will it interfere with hitching/unhitching? Does anyone have any real world experience with the V box v flat box with recommendations? Thanks for the advice.

There are no hazards or unexpected problems to be aware of unless you have the landing gear too low when you back to your trailer. It is possible to strike the kingpin with the box and I promise you, the kingpin won't move. But the boxes are designed for pickups towing fifth wheel trailers with the highest point in the notched "V" portion of the box cut low enough to allow you to back under your kingpin when it is at or slightly below normal height to engage your fifth wheel hitch. I used one for the entire time I was transporting trailers, 2 yrs. 9 mos. and 400,000 miles. The only reason I don't use one now is I replaced my last dually pickup with a C&C and flatbed with four storage boxes under the bed.

The best and cheapest source for the same Better Built box sold by Camping World is Lowe's Home Improvement. I've never seen them in stock in a Lowe's store but they used to be available via special order from Lowe's and were included in their on-line catalog, much cheaper than CW.

I have a good used one even cheaper but West Texas is a good day's drive from CO Springs.

I have been thinking about getting one of these tailgate boxes to supplement my forward toolbox. Can I still use my tailgate with one of these rear box toolboxes? I don't want to quit using the tailgate if I can help it.

Thanks..... Steve
