How about replacement, that's the word I'm looking for. In a heartbeat I would replace the OEM version. You have to practice the art of contortion to get to it. It is a recipe for leaks and I'm not so sure my WIF thingy even works.

I would want a reasonable priced filter, replacement cost that is. And maybe a sight bowl so I can be the filter monitor. Non restrictive and remotely mounted for ease of R&R.

Anyone? Anyone? ;)

I have been casually looking for a deal on a new style (99-06-ish) to mount on the firewall similar to the old 6. 9 Ford seperators. Then I could get the 7micron filters, and have easier access, though with my gorilla arms, reaching it isnt an issue.

I see no reason we cant run some lines with the correct size fittings into the VE pump head, bypassing the stock filter assembly altogether. Might keep it for the WIF capabilities.

There are many filter units that can work.

Racor for example makes a complete line. They work good. . I have them in my boat. They ahve 2, 10, and 30 micron elements. I would recommend a 500 series and a 10 micron element.

Fleetguard also has many that will work. Visit their web site.

I bought a 2 piece filter from Napa yrs. ago for my CAT 3208 , stock filter mount , the filter screwed on then on the bottom of the filter a plastic cup screwed on so you could see .

Thats what I am sayin. I was thinking of relocating to the firewall with remote setup. I am going to use an fittings and braided fuel line. I am going into town now to find the metric to an adapters and some other goodies. I have a Long Island truck parts not to far from my shop. I think they should have some sort of filter housing and filters.

I will post pics when I am done.

Just my $. 02 worth but if you locate the fuel water separator away from the block and live in frigid climates you may experience fuel filter gelling - the stock unit gains quite a bit of cold weather protection from being next to the warm engine block. Even a remote fuel water separator with an integral heater will not compensate enough for -20F weather and the new ULSD. Remember that that ULSD has less favorable cold flow characteristics than its predecessor fuel - meaning it will plug up a fuel filter at higher temps.

You can replace the factory fuel filter with a 1982 Volkswagon Rabbit. You eliminate the crappy plastic drain and the new filter has a water seperator built in.

Part numbers / pictures? Do you have any specs on the VW filter rig re flow information and filtration capabilities? I had an 85 VW Diesel engine in a Jetta and, as memory serves me. . . . the fuel filter / water separator was a bit on the small size . . . .

the fuel filter / water separator was a bit on the small size . . . .

I agree with you... and I "may" have a filter mount kicking around somewhere.
