You must have missed the “at my desk” part. It was 98 on my porch today.

Enough derail of your thread. Hope all goes well with your installation.

I have lived in the great north for 33 years. Different parts of the state have different kinds of weather daylight hours etc it’s a big state. It’s not for everyone. But if you have a profession and are young and outdoor active it’s a good place. There’s very rural and the city . Winters are LONG 7 months Daylight is short in the winter 5-6 hours in the south no sun for 2 months in the north . Summers are awesome like right now. At 72 winter is not for me so much anymore. We go to Maui in the hardest part of winter . All seasoned Alaskans do. But we start wearing shorts at about 45-50 f. We are different . We can tell your not from here because at that temperature you will most likely have a coat on. And if it’s cloudy a rain jacket. We play a game called spot the tourist. Tourist or local kind of fun. Ok my 7 year old granddaughter wants the iPad now

You go to Maui for two months? We were in Kauai for 10 days and it killed us.

Hotter fluid doesn't mean the whole unit is hotter, it means the fluid is hotter. The gears could be cooler by transferring heat to the fluid, but you can't tell that just by fluid temperature.

If the gear set was cooler than the lubricant then it would be absorbing heat from the lubricant. If the gears set is hotter then the heat moves to the lube. Increasing fluid capacity can cool things if there is increased surface contact area in the housing that can transfer that heat to the atmosphere. What I found is that by overfilling aeriation most likely was occurring in my differential and that by lowering the level to the stock fill level the unit ran cooler. With the cover that I have that would still be a larger amount of gear oil. However, I still consider it jewelery and would most likely not spend money on them again.

Same here. I'd just as soon kept the stock cover.

That's cool. I myself like it. It holds 4 quarts of oil just like stock fill. I'm sure it will keep the oil cooler. I like the magnetic drain and fill caps. The best part besides how it looks is the sight glass. I always check my trucks undercarriage. In fact the undercarriage is kept very clean. Every time I walk up to my truck now I can check the level and color of the oil. I'm always looking under my truck anyway, so this is perfect for me. I'm happy with it , and I'd do it again. This will be my 3rd cover on different trucks.

In a perfect world yes the fluid and gear set would be the same temp, but in actuality things don’t work that way. As I mentioned there isn’t a way to tell exactly what’s happening without multiple temp sensors, something none of us will likely ever do, or need.

I do agree on not spending the money on one again. Too much cooling isn’t a good thing, and there just isn’t a viable return on investment.

I think quality of the lube and changing it out at service intervals is more important than more capacity and cooling fins . But a factory drain plug front and rear would have been really nice. I spent about $750 in 20 years ago money on mag hytech front and rear covers and transmission cover. That certainly buys a lot of fluids doesn’t it.

Personally went the MagHytec route on my 98 12V. I still pulled the cover. Same with my 11 DRW with Geno’s sight glass. I really like the reusable gasket. Just remove the bolts n let it drain and clean things up and re assemble and fill.

IMHO no need for a drain plug. Now I do appreciate the drain plug on the AISIN.

Yes being under the a/t pan and taking it down is a whole different thing than being beside the diff cover when you crack it open. I know exactly what you mean

Understood that the gearset would be warmer than the oil since that is where the heat is being generated along with the bearings. Too much cooling is also relative. Let me go to extremes for example. A differential cooler with an extra 1-gallon diff cover, even with thermostatic control, would be to much for operation in the winter on the North Slope. The same set up might be adequate for racing in the outback in Australia. Wild extremes for sure.
Like I have always said, it's your truck dress it and take it to the dance the way you like it. After I bought the Mag Hytec and installed a temp probe (only one) and experimented with oil level I determined that it ran at least 20 degrees cooler with the stock fill level while towing. To me that pretty much disproves that the Mag Hytec filled to the top level keeps the gearset cooler. Heat is the enemy of longevity. There are several things that can be found to be positives about products Mag Hytec i.e. dipstick, magnets, drainplug. larger surface area offering a slight increase in cooling capability, etc. IMHO if you want to be able to check the fluid level and have the ease of service and have the $250 or so to spend, do it. I have and would not spend the money again for one. I have done my Ben Franklin close on it. In would spend the $250 elsewhere. Probably on a bypass oil filter for the engine.
