Has anyone used the Gear Venders over/under drive on an HO/6speed? Or other cummins.

What gears are you running, 4. 10 or 3. 55?

What RPM are you running empty at 70 or 75 MPH.

With my 4. 10s I am running 2000 RPM at 70 MPH and 2450 RPM at 75 MPH.

While I do not run emply often, I feel it would be nice to slow the engine down some at normal freeway speeds.

TIA

Bob

Just a question... My 01 4x4 with the six speed and 3. 55's runs 70 at exactly 2000... 75 at 2125... I wouldn't think the 3. 55 and 4. 10 would be the same at 70... . ?

brobeson,

You need to check your rpm's again. I find it hard to believe you are turning 450 more rpm's for a five mph gain.

I have a US Gear Overdrive on my 2001 3500 ETH/DEE with factory 4. 10's. Mine's set as an overdrive (of course), so I can run 75 mph at 2000 RPM (approx).

However, I have noticed absolutely NO MPG improvement with the overdrive. It is useful for split shifting on hills and stuff, but to be honest, when I'm towing, I rarely use any of the OD gears. I generally run 60-65 mph in 6th, keeping the rpms at 2000-2200.

RobG.

So let me get this straight as this is exatcly the information I was looking for.

Stock we do about 2500 RPM in 6th at 75 MPH.

With your overdrive you are doing about 2000 RPM in 6th at 75. A 500 RPM drop.

And running empty you see no differance in MPG.

TIA

Bob:

Yup, that sounds about right. The US Gear is a 20% overdrive, so 500 RPM is about right in 6th. I have 19. 5" tires, so the actual RPMs may be off by 200 RPM or so, but the drop is around 500 RPM.

Mileage... I saw ZERO difference between running with it engaged or disengaged. The whole reason I bought the **** thing was to try to improve the pathetic mileage this POS truck has gotten since the day I bought it.

My overall mileage has gone up a bit, but it's still NOWHERE near what most people are reporting (high teens). My best unloaded has been 14. 5 mpg. My best towing as 12, but it hovers between 10-11 most of the time (loaded -- 19k GCWR).

To be honest, I wish I'd kept my '96 and just rebuilt the automatic in it.

My first tank of fuel I went 388 mile on 25 gal of fuel for a little over 15 MPG, then I went on a 1300 mile trip with our 5er at a CGVWR of 20400#. I got 9 MPG. I have gottin a little over 16 MPG (285 miles on 17 gals of fuel= 16. 7 MPG)on my last tank with out the trailer. I still have less than 2000 miles on the truck. 100% stock.
