I only wish it was with my truck. I just bought an 02 VW Golf TDI 5sp.

I assume fuel prices are only going up, so this will save some cash and miles on the truck.

It's pretty peppy with the 5 sp, never feel like it's underpowered. Not a bad 2cnd veh.

We used to own a TDI. Neat car best mileage was 62 on a long trip. Sold at over 150k w/ only normal maintenance. Would have got another, but not sold in CA anymore.

I drive an 02 Jetta TDI 100 miles round trip to work, average 44 mpg driving HARD on mountain roads averaging 45 MPH. I love it. Handles like it is on rails, and has plenty of power, the subaru WRXs are the only thing I can't keep up with, but then again I am doubling thier MPGs so I can't complain.

We never went power up, but here is a source if you want some info to battle wrx's. http://www.tdiclub.com/

I think the TDI's are cool, but have never owned one. At one time I had an old Rabbit diesel. Not much power, but great MPG. The old rabbits are fine accept at todays highway speeds. I hope the TDI gives you many trouble free miles.

All diesel family

We average just over 40mpg on our new diesel Passat. Plenty of power, too! Now if we could just get those fuel prices a little bit lower!

My roommate in flight school had an old green diesel Rabbit. That smoked and would never die. He called it:

The THUNDER PICKLE

We went to the VW dealer In Pittsburgh area and they would not deal with us. No discount they said. I told them to stick It up there a**. I ended getting a new Chevy cobalt. It a super car dut the gas mileage Is 25 to 26. I don't like the way the VW dealers treat you. They make me get upset. It to bad they don't make a pickup?I don't think they want any of us to buy a VW from them.

I am waiting for the "American" auto makers to wake up and start putting diesels back in cars... ... . if they don't get off thier duffs soon I'll be buying something foriegn for the first time. I once owned a Pontiac Bonneville with a diesel and it got around 27mpg hwy. I hated to get rid of it but it was pushing 120000 and it was only a matter of time before it would have cost me big bucks, those converted gassers just did not hold up.

A really good friend of mine, named George, long ago had a diesel Rabbit. Not long after he purchased it, I asked him how he liked it. He just grinned and said "I can drive for pennies a day. " :D

Yep - no deals on diesels. Best chance is to get a deal on the trade in or try to find a used one. I tried to work with every dealer in the three state area and they were all very clear that there was no negotiation available on the diesels... I gather that it's because there's not that many of them made and demand outpaces production consistently.

That said, we did ok with a trade in on the F150! Not unhappy to see that go!

The Passat is worth it - same dimensions, feel of my previous Audi A6 with better mileage, great handling, and up to 600 mile breaks between fuel stops...

We have a 2001 Beetle TDI. It does keep the miles off the truck on the 85 mile commute. It has 100,000 miles on it and not one problem - just normal maintenance. We have averaged 46mpg over the 100,000 miles. Still on the first set of brakes, 2nd set of tires with half the tread remaining. We added a chip which boosted hp from 90 to 115 (pathetic huh) - still feels peppy enough. We can normally beat most old ladys and FORDs in a drag. We also added 17wheels and performance tires. It holds the corners (good thing - that way you do not need to try and speed back up. ) The mpg jumped 1mpg with the chip but dropped 2mpg with the bigger tires. We are thinking about adding injectors. The Beetle has tremendous room in the front seats. More leg and headroom than the full size RAM. I am 6'5" and used to weight 280lbs - thanks to weight watchers and exercise I am now 214lbs. I still feel the urge about once a week to drive the big truck though.

Shopping some local dealers was a pain in the a**. After a day of discouragement and them saying can't find cyber green in leather with TDI, we were out to prove them wrong. That night we surfed the internet VW sites and located the car with all the options we wanted at a dealer 200mi from home. We called them and were able to negotiate a fair price with their internet sales person. They confirmed all options on the car by phone. We gave them loan info over the phone, hopped in the car and drove down to get it. 45 min at dealer (including test drive and signing all paperwork) and we were on our way home. We felt like driving it past all the dealers that told us NO WAY and were thousands of $'s more. We payed slightly over MSRP.

Nice Beetle Ramrod!

I test drove a Jetta TDI wagon recently and I was very impressed with the power and handling. If I take the outside sales position that has been offered to me I will probably get one.

Howdy, I too have a 2000 Jetta TDI, my TDI is souped up, I have an aftermarket hybrid turbo, PP520 injectors, FMIC, LSD, VR6/G60 flywheel/clutch upgrades. Full suspension mods. I get 42 mpg with a heavy leaded boot. Great car, highly recommend VW TDI's. For those who are interested: www.tdiclub.com

Got a 2003 Jetta Sedan TDI 5-speed (only way to go is with a manual). I get about 49/50 in winter and 55mpg in summer. Best was a trip to NJ at 58. 95 mpg. I've got over 67,000 miles on it now, definitely a money saver. Oh, and if any of you guys live in the north you might want to consider the TDIHeater block heater. I just had one installed (by a TDI'er who knows these things like the back of his hand). It is a great item for the VW TDI ... www.tdiheater.com great "bomb" for the car and worth every penny ... and after I saw how easy it was to install I said "I could of done that no problem".

Also, there is DEFINITELY no wheeling and dealing on Passat TDI's. They are so new that everyone wants one. My wife would like a Passat TDI wagon, but only in AWD and with a 5 or 6 speed manual.

LOL THE THUNDER PICKLE I LOVE IT,,,,

I've been looking to buy a TDI I drive about 85 miles round trip for work everyday,,, not sure to buy a new one or used one tho... .
