I check my oil like a religion, at least once a week around town and always while on road trips. I noticed all of a sudden the motor was "MAKING OIL", and I had to crank on it for an extended amount of time while pressing on the peddle to get it to start. And now it is smoking alot more at an idle. Its almost like it has lost prime in between starts. Can any of you guys help with this problem?

Make: Dodge

Year: 1998

Motor: 12 valve Cummins

transmission: ATS stg 3 auto

Injectors: DDP stg 2

My guess would be a leaking lift pump diaphragm or injectors. Smoking more is caused by the diluted oil, which I would change soon.

I just pulled the injectors out, all of the injectors look fine but one had a brass sealing washer on the bottom that has a larger O. D. and is very loose when slid over the tip. The brass washer is also out of shape compared to the other brass washers on the other injectors. Could this be the causing the diesel to saturate the oil?

94 to 98 12 valves have a piston lift pump. When they fail the diesel fuel goes to the crank case. No real way to check it on the engine or on the bench. But when you say your loseing prime then it's got to be the lift pump.

Good to know about the lift pump, I will check it out. But if an injector was stuck open would that cause the high pressure side of the pump to loose prime by leaking the psi off?????

The washer isue is not the culprit. An injector leaking should cause a rough idle on startup also. My bet is the lift pump.
