What effect does the spring kit have on everything else besides rpm like smoke, egt, boost, mpg etc. if you drive it the same as before at the stock rpm range? I'm really curious why it makes such a difference besides just more rpm. I know you make more hp mathematicly but how does it do the rest? Are you moving your plate or leaving it be? Are you putting in the heavy valve springs to take advantage of more rpm? That's probably a dumb question - I know that's the next step! If all the side effects are favorable, I'll gladly be in for a group purchase. Craig

You have to have tiny hands and the skill of a brain surgeon to install these springs-Monday I'm gonna call some local injector shops-looking down in the innards below the cam plate trying to line up those springs 5" below knowing one slip = big problems forgetaboutit. Just call me chicken.

Well folks, a little update on the BD spring kit. Last night I decided to tighten up on the springs to raise the rpm a bit. I was governing at 3500 and wanted to see how the low end would be affected with the increased tension on the spring packs. So I pulled the fuel-plate and cranked the locking retainer nut two clicks each side. Started the engine up and let it warm to reset the idle which was about 200 rpm higher. Fixed that and then ran into town to see what was up. Well the truck felt far more responsive and smooth in the lower end and up through to the new governing speed of 3650 + or - a few rpm. So this morning I set out to the horse show with goose neck in tow and was very happy with the response in comparison to last week's trip. To make a short story long, don't be afraid to play around with the spring tensions with a click here or a click there, you just may be surprised how things turn out.

I must say that for towing, the 280 fuel-plate, 370 injectors, HX40/16 and gov. spring kit makes for a very clean and powerful towing setup and the best I've had to date. This setup produces little smoke under hard pulls and almost zero smoke during normal towing, and that is with 40 psi max boost.

C Schomer, one of the affects of the spring kit is the ability to embarrass a couple of kids in a late 80's IROC Z28. I was running the 330 fuel-plate (48 psi boost) and shamed these poor unsuspecting youngsters with a big old cloud of dust and smoke. Not bad for big old 4X4. #ad

Bill Gotthelf, I'll be the first to admit that I'm far from the Brain Surgeon skill level, actually the total opposite. All you need is a good heavy pencil magnet to hold onto those pesky springs. It's not much harder then the fuel-plate install, just more time consuming. Just wait until you're done to have the beer.

I'm enjoying this new toy from BD more and more everyday!!! So Piers what new toys are you thinking up??

DBR, the spring kit sounds terrific! Do you know if how much adjustment is left in the stock springs? I've been thinking of just turning up the rpm about 200 and see what it does. It sound like, turning the nuts down on the stock spring should work to some extent but maybe not very much. Craig

C Schomer, Been there, done that for fun. The problem with tightening down on the governor springs is that you reach a point where you lose idle quality. You will gain a little upper rpm, but starting the truck becomes much harder and you will not be able to lower your idle rpm to an appropriate level. The stock spring packs in the governor of the 5sp trucks are designed for 3000 rpm and not much more. This would be similar to moving the stock fuel plate forward. You get some improvement but the results are nothing like going to a new fuel-plate. If you want to play around, go ahead and turn the retaining nut one or two clicks, no more, but don't expect big results. For that, get the BD spring kit.

Speaking of serious groveling... .

@ the Texas Rally Dr. Joe was installing plates, spring kits, etc. but there was only one of him- not nearly enough to go around and take care of all of us. How 'bout an official presence by Piers, et al from BD @ the next Rally? Bring parts & tools and we'll supply the trucks & $$$$$$$!!!!!

The best way to adjust or put in the new spring kit is to remove the shut off sylniod and lever and remove the big nut on the side of the pump. I've done it both ways and removing the nut is the best way I think.

DBR - Thanks, I won't bother with the stock springs. Ski2 - I might take you up on your offer! I guess if I end up with too much smoke in the rest of the rpm range, I can slide the plate back. Is anyone else interested in a group purchase on the gov. kit and maybe valve springs? Craig

I would love something to drive down the price of those gov. spring kits. $200 is outrageous for four springs no matter what it does. I would be very interested in a group purchase.

THANKS FOR THE INFO. IF THERE IS A GROUP PRICE I'D DEFINITELY BE INTERESTED.

I agree with Strick-9, $200. 00 for springs is ridiculous. Talk about a mark-up. I would also be interested in a group purchase if the price came way down. -Glen

I took my governor springs out yesterday. Removing the shutoff solenoid and lever and accessing them through the big nut as ski2 suggested is easier in my opinion. There are three springs under each retaining nut. Can someone tell me which two are replaced in the governor spring kit? I would assume the middle one is most important because of its size and strength.

Chris the gov. kit replaces all 3 of the inner springs, only the big outer spring is left stock, plus the seats. Which are hardend to Rockwell 60 spec's.

Just ordered the Gov. spring kit from TST is this the same one? Plus I also have coming with it 370 Diamond B injectors, #4 pump kit, Afc spring kit is this a good combo. ?
Piers is your e-mail working?
Thanks everybody for your help #ad
