GPS Suggestions.......

My mother-in-law bought me a Garmin eTrex GPS for Christmas (about $100). Well she also gave me the receipt so I could exchange it if I would like. Well I do alot of driving and was looking at some of the mapping GPS units. Only looking to spend an extra $100. So around $200 total. So in the $200 range of the latest GPS units, are they better than say a GPS III that is a few years old? The reason I ask is, I is I found a GPS III for around $100 at auction, it might go bit more when all said and done. Is it worth it? How high do I go?

Well It looks like the the Garmin Etrex Legend (165. 00) has a whole lot more to offer than the GPS III. I looked at a comparison on garmin: http://www.garmin.com/outdoor/compare.jsp

I've got the Legend with a couple of different cds to go with it and love it. We go trailriding on horseback in the Mark Twain forest and I wouldn't go without it. I just download a topo of whatever area I'm riding in and hit the trail.

Love the Legend also. I have both maptech and map source cdroms and I use it with my laptop. It used to have a 50 rebate andcould be for around 150$ which is alot of bang for the buck IMO

Well I just traded the ETrex in for the Legend... ... ..... I am going to try it and see if I like it or not. I have also been looking at the Vista aswell but I read a terrible review on www.pricegrabber.com about the ETrex series. Anyway, like I said I got teh legend and am going to take it on a trip to Tennessee to morrow. Trying to decide if I shouild go with the Vista. I really want the Altimeter function.

I picked up a used (like new, though) Garmin GPSMAP 176 on ebay for just a bit over $200 If it were me, I'd get the cash and check the auction listings.

I personally have had the Garmin Etrex for 3 years. It rides in my fanny pack on hikes and dirt bike trips. I am going to get the serial cable so I can connect it to my Palm.

Garmin GPS V (five) here. Price was not a factor since I got it for Christmas from my loving wife



The mapping features are cool. City Select routing is pretty powerful but mostly I use the topos for hunting. The only negative is that the display is really too small to be safely used while driving. If you're really a nerd, you can hook it up through a serial port to your laptop, which perches nicely on the center console. NOW you have a map to navigate by! Garmin makes a nifty cable that doubles as a 12v power supply to the GPS, and a serial port to the laptop.



My heads up display from the driver's seat includes the GPS, ham radio, radar detector, and 3 A-pillar gauges. One day a guy at work walks by my truck, looks at all this and says, "Holy cow, does this thing FLY too?!"

I have the entry level etrex and it works great for what I need. I use it to take reference waypoints when riding my snowmachine or ATV. That way when the we get lost I can just go back to the last waypoint I took and we are found. I also use it to record the "track" we take. When I get home I dump it into the mapsource software and see where I went. On my next ride or adventure I print out the map of the area with all my waypoints on it and we are good to go.
