 Several times I have had a very shrill, whistling noise in the cab of my truck. Just comes out of the blue, last about 10 seconds, does not effect anything; all gauges are normal, trucks runs the same, turning radio off has no effect. Has done this 5 or 6 times in last 7 months. Any ideas?

Jim, you aren't wearing a hearing aid are you? I have a friend who's hearing aid squeals frequently.

Can you tell approximately were it's coming from? Under the floor, under the hood, under the dash?

My brothers '03 came up with a funny noise the other week... he had a bulb out! Wouldn't an idiot light suffice? That tone about drove us crazy to work and back. Answer about the hearing aid also! I've dealt with that before with a co- worker. Or to quote that particular co-worker you could... "Run it 'til it breaks then you'll know what it was. " I personally don't practice this method! See ya' Greg

noise

Tom, I do wear hearing aids; however it happens when I do not wear the aids, too.

If this happens when excellerating, or under a load, it may be the exhaust manifold loose. It happened on my 99. If I remember correctly, the bolts had worked loose. I had it fixed under warranty, and I think that they put some kind of lock bar on the bolts, that was not there from the factory. Anyway, the symptoms were the same as you described.

I'm runnin' out of ideas, I was debating a squealing throw-out bearing but I see yours is an auto. You would think if it was a bearing the noise would become more and more frequent. Hey... I did have a Toyota pickup at the station one time with a strange, loud, intermitent squeal. I actually ended up riding around in the bed of the truck trying to figure were it came from. His carrier bearing was causing it. It was an unusual one as the truck was very low mileage. Does yours even have a carrier? Or like mine one piece drive shaft. Greg

I have had the experience in other veichles that when the trans needs flushed, I will hear a whistling noise from under veichles. I don't know if this is the case for you, but worth a shot.
