2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Drivers Door Questions

Just arrived in Oklahoma City, OK and am looking for a good Dodge dealership.
It appears my injection pump is going south. I have changed the fuel filter and have good pressure into the pump. Symptions are pulling heavy and all of a sudden the power just dies away and boost goes way down. I can pull over and shut it off and it a minute it picks up again or sometimes it will pick up after downshifting etc. Just depends. The first thing I done was to take off the Edge EZ and no help just not as pronounced. Then changed fuel filter, no help there either.

If anyone knows of a good dealer in OKC let please let me know. Thanks - Dean

Turn the key on and off three times leaving in on the third time. Watch the OD and write down any codes. P0216 is the death code for the VP44. SNOKING

Okc

Thanks guys for the info.
The codes I retrieved were: 1693, 0216, 0382, 0380

I will try and get it in Monday. Thanks again - Dean

P0380

Glow Plug/Heater Circuit "A" Malfunction

P0382

Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Malfunction

P0216

Injection Timing Control Circuit Malfunction

216 is "death of the VP44"

The other two do not make sense. SNOKING

SNOKING, all the codes had the p in front of them I just didn't write it down. I guess it sounds like my injection pump is shot. Did you install the new pump yourself and is there any external adjustments or is it a bolt on thing? - Dean

I did it myself. Had to build a puller for the drive gear. Took me around 4 hours, but that was with a few trips to the auto supply store. Blue Chip sells a puller. I only removed three of the injector lines as someone else suggested, and pushed the other three against the block. A Dodge Dealer will charge you a lot more for the pump plus the labor. If you can not do it your self, find a diesel shop to do it. Should be only 2-3 hours for them. Or maybe their is a member that will come down with the correct tools and drink your beer and supervise you doing it. SNOKING

Look up the phone # for Thompson Diesel. They have a drive in shop in OKC.

Thompson has always done good work for me, and they are good people to deal with. If you can't find an OKC phone number call their Tulsa # (918) 250-2535. or you can call me @ (918) 625-8191

It turned out that the engine had a few months of warrenty left so Fowler dodge repaced the injector pump. It almost makes me leary to hit the road again. Will drive it a day and put the EZ back on and see what happens. My old 96 didn't have this problem. Just had to put in 5th gear on the road in Springfield, MO one year.
Thank you guys for your input and offers to help. - Dean

No, they did not put in the intank lift pump. Some time ago I had put in a vulcan big line pusher setup, moved lift pump back on the frame, and have had good pressure to the injection pump ever since. It doesn't go down past 12 lbs, most always around 13 when pulling. I had one dealer tell me in Laramie, WY that it was all about flow and not pressure. Anyway I carry two lift pumps and two fuel filters in the truck for emergency change out. Guess I need too add a VP 44 to the list. Where does it stop?!! - Dean

Your new pump should last a long time. Late 2001's and 2002 got pumps with brass bores that caused a lot of issues. I just recently changed my VP44 and truck is running very well, and confidence is returning. Big RV trip this fall. SNOKING

This is an old post so I don't know if you are still in the TDR, but I grew up in Moscow, ID. and had to comment on someone from Meridian. I now own two ferds and my old dodge 2001 and a new one 2011. Inherited the Ferds when I bought a company out, boy do I wish he was into dodge. I've had all kinds of power strike problems. My cummins has a few know issues and I too carry a spare fuel lift pump on each truck. On the Ferd you need a whole spare engine. They just can't seem to get it right. Don't feel bad about the few spare parts that you know will get you out of just about any problem wiht a cummins, it could be a lot worse.
